Magic controller configurable parameters

Hello guys,

I'm running with:

MBG36R (250W)
Magic controller
2 LiPoly 5C batteries in series (36V)
20'' wheels

I would like to know what parameters do you suggest me for:

Max current (continuous)
Max current (peak)

When first got the controller, the factory settings for 24V were 25A continuous and 50A peak.

I always doubted these values because this means 600A continuous and 1200W peak in a 250W small motor!!!

However, I'm still running with this 24V configuration and the motor is still there!

I want to have your advice before mounting the 36V lipoly battery.

You should set 15A for mini gear motor to prevent from over-loading the motor.

Depending on your ah

This will burn your motor out.  LIPO 5c 36v, if you have 10ah pack this will do 1800 watts and this would not be healthy for your motor.

Good you listen to Yuan , its your lipo thats the loose cannon, so watch how you feed your motor with it.   Great we can now set these things.

Hello guys,

Yes, it's nice to hear this from Yuan, but I still don't get if I should configure 15A for the peak or for continuous current.

I imagine that 15A is for the peak. If so, should I configure 10A for the continuous current? It's still above the Max ratings (10Ax36V=360W) but I guess this wouldn't damage the motor on a 20'' wheel.

Please tell me more about this. Thank you very much guys.

Luís,

I would suggest the 36 Volt battery setting, a FWD scale speed of 100% with 10 Amps continuous and 15 Amps peak. 
As your 37 Volt LiPo pack will be ~42 Volts after a full charge, this should produce the following:

  • A continuous power consumption of 420 Watts (320 Watts of actual output power @ 77% efficiency).
  • A peak power consumption 630 Watts Max (440 Watts of actual output power @ ~70% efficiency).

If the motor gets too warm, you can always reduce these figures, but if it stays reasonably cool, you may be able to gradually increase them.

Just bear in mind that overloading these minimotors on long steep hills will overheat the motor windings, which can melt the insulation on the hall sensor wires causing a short circuit and failure of the hall sensors. Unfortunately this would mean your motor would stop working altogether, as these minimotors can't be started in sensorless mode due to the internal freewheel device.

I will certainly let you guys know what is my new top speed on 20'' wheels.

I wonder how my mini motor is still alive.

It's been a month since I ride it everyday at 24V with the max current ratings: 50A peak (1200W) and 30A continuous (720W).

I guess this 250W mini motor is more likely to be a 500W motor!

Carl, As your battery can deliver 20 Amps continuous and 35 Amps max, I would suggest you set the controller to 48 Volt battery setting, a FWD scale speed of 100% with 20 Amps continuous and 30 Amps peak.  

If you prefer range to power, reducing these figures should help to improve your range, but you will have to try it and see what actual difference it makes.

Thank you very much for sharing that info with us all.  The Cruise controller is great because it is configurable, the only thing lacking is any form of documentation.

GM motor current settings.



Set your volts to your pack.  EG 48v pack 48v setting.

Mini motor. 250 watt, 7 amps 15 amps max as per curve graph data.

HBS36 500 watt 15 amps continuous 20 amps max (540 to 900 watts)

HBS36 750 watt 20 amps continuous and 30 amps max  (720 watts to 1080 watts)

HBS48 1000 watt 20 amps continuous  and 30 amps max. (960 to 1440 watts)

The magic Pie all versions 20 amps continuous and 30 amps max.
 
Simply divide the watts your motor is rated at by your battery voltage.

EG 48v divided by 1000 watts = 20.83333 amps.  

Set you max amps no more than 1/3 above your continuous setting.

EG...

18 amps cont 24 max.


Do not deviate from this unless you know what you are doing...
