Controller damage from reversing polarity

I sent a message yesterday asking if a controller can be repaired, but realized later that I am making an assumption which may not be correct.  Here's the situation.  I managed to reverse the polarity of the 36 volts coming from the batteries to the controller... quick sparks and after that nothing even though I corrected the polarity input.  I assumed that the controller is damaged from this action and that only the controller would be damaged.  Is this correct or could the front hub also be damaged?  My kit is a few years old and the controller is an earlier aluminum cased one.  If I replaced (or if possible had repaired) the controller would I be good to go?  Is there a way to safely test whether or not the motor is OK?

Odds are pretty good that your motor is just fine.

Without opening the controller up and doing first a visual inspection for burn parts it is hard to tell how serious the damage is.

But from the onset, my first guess is that you have killed the low voltage regulator. That is were I would start.

The motor is fine, the controller R.I.P-ed. The only way for you to resolve this is to buy a new controller.
