Freedex trike conversion recommendations
« on: June 21, 2016, 01:19:42 PM »
New to the group and I'm excited to power up my son's trike.  He has cerebral palsy and because of  balance / strength issues on his right side, so we got him a trike so he could exercise, and easily get on the trike due to its design.  (I've attached a pic)

The problem he's having is he wants to ride farther than his legs can take him so he's tired coming home.  The bike has a front 12" wheel with a disc brake (not a good brake) so I was looking at both options for the front wheel.
I want to be able to regulate the speed as he's only 8 so max speed isn't a big selling point as I don't want him to be racing any motorcycles! Lol

Due to his disability he can only use his left side so I was wondering  if it's possible to have all controls on the left side?
Also how good is the regenerative braking? As he can only use the one hand braking is a huge concern too.

Seeing as we won't be going for 20km bike rides, what size battery would I be able to get away with using?
I'm sure there are some things im forgetting or don't know about, so really like to hear any suggestions before I make a mistake.
Thanks in advance

My reply is basically the same as it was the last time you asked:
A 12" Smart Pie would probably be ideal apart from the braking system.

I don't know whether that drum brake could be easily transferred to the Smart Pie, but I suspect you may need to fabricate a mounting for a mechanical disc brake caliper to allow the locking front brake to be retained.

The maximum speed with a 24V battery should be around 6 mph (10km/h), on a 48V battery it should be around 12 mph (20km/h).

The speed and power could be reduced using the programming software and USB programming cable if required.

The 12" Smart Pie is very compact but has plenty of torque, and could easily be used in conjunction with a lightweight 24V 8Ah bottle mount battery mounted on the front of the forks to add some useful weight to the driving wheel for better traction:

Very Light and Easy Carry Water Bottle LiMn Battery Packs

36V08AH: 2.5kgs, for 35-40km range per charge
24V10AH: 2.1kgs, for 30km range per charge
24V08AH: 1.8kgs, for 25km range per charge

For higher speed, the 48V rack mounted battery could also be mounted on the front of the forks:

With the 12" wheel, the regenerative braking force should be very strong if set to maximum and a thumb throttle can be used on the left hand side along with the single parking brake lever assembly.

The parking brake lever would need to have some form of switch fitted to cut the power and activate the regenerative braking.

I think the biggest problem with this conversion will be adapting the front drum brake unit:

Have you enquired as to how much it would cost to upgrade using the genuine Freedex electric assist package?
