Magic Pie controller connections
« on: April 29, 2016, 01:06:39 AM »
Could really use some help on this one please..
I have a Magic Pie 3 with the  Smart Pie/Magic Pie universal controller and am reworking the harness to controller due to wire damage.I found broken loose wires on the board that the wiring harness coming into controller connects to.The harness itself had been pinched and wires broke on the outside,so I am in middle of shortening harness to re work to the inside board. As you can see in pic I have a orange and a brown wire that may have come off their solders,,alongside the existing ones there are 2 empty spots, however look very clean and not sure if these had been solder there to begin, with.can anyone enlighten me please? do these belong somewhere on the pcb if so where? thanks in advance
from left to right-
pas-yellow-first spot on left for reference
tx-empty 2nd spot-left to right
rx 7th spot left to right empty.

Hi Madman andto the forum.

I have carried out a quick search of the forum, but the only pictures I can find showing the wiring connections on the universal controller are these:

Unfortunately, the camera angle does not make it very easy to determine the exact wire locations on the controller's PCB.

I don't have one of these controllers, so I am unable to look at one to obtain the information that you require, but Gary (GM Canada) may have one of these in stock that he can hopefully take a close look at to obtain the correct order of the wire connections/colours etc.

If the coloured wires have the same function as on the sine wave controller, the Orange is for the Data Transmit and the Brown is for the Data Receive:

It is difficult to tell from the pictures whether the wires are simply soldered to the top surface of the PCB, or whether they are "through holes" going to the rear surface of the PCB. But if the wires are only soldered to the copper surface/track of the PCB, then it is possible that the copper surface may have been peeled away from the surface of the circuit board, which might explain why the "2 empty spots" look so clean.
If this is the case, you probably won't be able to resolder those two wires to the circuit board unless you are extremely lucky.   :(

Hopefully (assuming those two wires are only used for programming) you should still be able to use the controller with its currently programmed parameters if nothing else on the controller has been damaged when the wires were originally pinched.

Please let us know the outcome of this repair.

Alan

Thanks for the help Bikemad,it appears this repair should go well.Of course I should not speak so soon :o.O the pcb itself the silkscreen is blurry, and my eyes are getting old and my arms are getting too short when reading, but under a lense the"rx" is legible.I thought well no problem as I do not use a sine wave. That being said when I started to prep the harness for reinstalling and peeled back the case the brown and orange fell out,or at least about 2" of each did, making it hard to tell where the attached or if attached. The pics you provided were most helpful,I searched and found a couple just as fuzzy as my own and as you say camera angle and with wires in the way we cannot see where they go.However in a couple of pictures you can see the brown and orange wires are cut shorter and not in use,so must presume this is the way they are shipped/made.Again thanks for the help, the soldering station is warming and unless halls or something else got taken out when wires were pinched I should be off and wheelin later this morning.thank you.
