what is this? is it supose to be there?
« on: October 13, 2008, 11:12:53 PM »
his is my first problem so I am a total newbie.  My hub motor is a mess right now so I opened it up and saw a spot that had a spot of solder on it that I wasn't sure should be there.  is this blocking the axle from spinning?  thanks anybody that can help!!

this take you to my site that I wrote comments on the image.

Sorry the pic is microscopic and I cannot see it well enough to say much but the axle is not supposed to spin.  The hub does but alas you already know that. If the solder or debris stops the bearing from spinning then it needs be removed although likely the bearings would already be damaged.

Hi Scott.  ;D

I don't know that looks ugly though.

Do your bearings still spin?

And that looks close to the bearing seat but its only lead and tin a gm motor would of chewed that off and up grinded it into dust in about 3 seconds.

Look for washers or things that stick to the magnets as things tend to almost fly from 1 foot away just to stick to them.. look for scratches along the electro magnets (winding cores) around the whole rotor as they should show un scratched and any sign of scratches shows you have a rotor sticking problem or something is stuck to the magnets.  Test if you bearing spin and finaly make sure you centre the rotor properly when you reseal the hub.

Lastly you wont be able to turn the axle by hand if any of the 3 phase power wires (the thick ones) are touching each other.  It creates a magnetic field between the windings and magnets that sticks the rotor like regen does, so it might turn after all if you check those phase wires.

Is that silver solder? As it looks as though its there to repair a crack. I think I can see two problems there under both solders.  Silver solder is plenty strong for the job and does not hurt the materials that you solder it to.  I had an alloy goose  neck that developed a rather large crack around the shaft, I it got silver soldered up and the solder lasted 6 years compared to the weldings that only lasted 2 weeks..  I was a danger to my self when I rode the Diamond Back BMX when a youngster.  I could do BMX jumps over 25 feet long @ 12 feet high and land onto the silver solder joint at full force..

Both of the places you point out are the welding done to hold the axle parts together as they are not one solid machined part.  They are done well and supposed to be there. The one small one is where the welding stopped or started and was not cleaned up properly but matters not as people don't normally see it.

I found out what it was.  I opened it up and found a zip tie clipping inside the hub.  it was making terrible sounds and stopping the wheel.

Nice when things end up being able to be fixed with a little work and very little expense.  Good job
