why does my Magic Pie II make a pinging sound when cruising?

it sounds like something may be loose...

If it's making a pinging noise when riding without a battery, it may be because the spokes are loosening as they settle in with use.
Check the tension of the spokes and re-tension them if required using a size 13 spoke key. Make sure you tension the spokes evenly to ensure the wheel remains true.

I use a universal spoke key like this:

It's cheap and cheerful, but does the job nicely.

The pinging noise from the motor under load is caused by the electromagnetic pulses from the stator windings.

my experience is that the new pies are shipping with very loose spokes...much better that you go to a bike shop and ask them to tighten for you, as you may pull the hub away from the middle......

i tighten it up already but I think I might consider the going to Bicycle Mechanic to Make Sure it is Balanced. Makes Much Sense!

I have found the spokes actually loosen while
riding in my Magic Pie.  (It has been trued once.)

I have never had a double walled rim before, I think
that the inner tube has always pressed the spoke
caps and held them on other rims.

I just re-trued my rim after one cap actually came off
and fell into the rim.

I am going to put lock-tight on the caps after I ride and
re-true it once more.
