question re amperage of a controller

Can anyone explain what the "Amperage" part of a controller's spec means? e.g. if a controller is rated at "36V 20A", does this mean it will allow a maximum of 20A to flow to the motor?

For the most part the answer is yes.  Controllers and the way some rate them are not all equal though. Most will allow a peak quite a bit above rated until things heat up which will happen on hills and hauling heavy loads.  So that should be taken into consideration.  I think it best to get a bit better than you think you will need and make the thing bullet proof then there will be less problems later on. Have a 20 amp fuse on my GM with 36v and regen have near stalled it several times on short steep hills no blown fuses so have not hit that limit yet.

Does the website have any specs for the controllers?  I would like to know what the max voltage and current is for the 48V motor, and the 48V controller.  I'm thinking of getting a few tool kit battery packs and connecting them in series.   This could be as much as 72 V.   Thanks for any info.

I would very much doubt that the 48v motor or controller are up to 72 volts.  You can try flea-bay for the 72v controller there have been some modded controllers there.  Don't forget about the LVC Low Voltage Cutoff when getting or modding a controller else you could ruin your batts.  Also Knoxie on the endless Sphere forum sells them, I bought one from him some weeks back, others may also.  The motor would need some mods before even an attempt at that voltage should be made. Then again you may want to check with Phillip about the voltage constraints on the motor.

I think Link on Endless Sphere is running his goldenmotor at 72V.  He replaced the lead wires and I think he either replaced the controller or heavily modified it to handle the voltage.
