My Black Chopper Project Using A BLT 800w Sprocket Motor

I'm a bit disappointed with the drive sprocket on the motor it's the wrong size for bicycle chain  
why would Golden Motor do this

All going well except the motor sproket has the wrong size teeth but I think I have solved that problem

It is unfortunate you need to go to such lengths to use these motors. I am surprized a sprocket that fits can not be easily found. I have looked myself. I am going to ask GM about this one. This does seem silly.

I got the sprocket from electric scooter parts in the US its the closes one I could find to fit bicycle chain
but the spindle hole is only 11mm so I will have to bore it out and deepen the keyway slot

I want to use bicycle chain even on a trike EV I don't think you want different types of chain on the same bike even if the larger chain is stronger , bicycle chain is cheap , there are a good variety of larger alloy  sprockets go with it and I'm sure it will handle a 800w BLDC motor   otherwise you would have to use heavy rear steel motor cycle sprockets   The one I"m using is an Alloy crank sprocket from a BMX

Hey Gary, I would disagree here because the motor types do specifically state "Electric Tricycle Motors" and the sprockets on them are a fair bit thicker than a standard bicycle sprocket.

Providing you used the correct rear sprocket, you could use it on a bicycle I think that's what Who42 may have found.

If it's available with a different sprocket great, but I would stand saying that the one it comes with is standard for that type of motor - I'll get some more info, or maybe Who42 can post up the measurements. I have 2 other motors that have the same sprockets, they are pretty standard.

This is the sprocket supplied with BLT 800 motor

I have never seen 420 chain used on any Bicycle Trikes that I have converted to Electric its always been standard bike chain it may well be used in Asia on bigger Rickshaw type trikes  


#25 chain is used on electric scooters, bicycles, and pocket bikes.
#25 chain has a 1/4" spacing between each chain link and is approximately 1/4" wide.
#35 chain is used on mopeds, mini-bikes and go-karts.
#35 chain has a 3/8" spacing between each chain link and is approximately 3/8" wide.
8mm chain is used on pocket bikes.
8mm chain has an 8mm spacing between each chain link and is approximately 10mm wide.
Bicycle chain is used on bicycles and electric bicycles.
Bicycle chain has 1/2" spacing between each chain link and is approximately 3/8" wide. The most common sizes of bicycle chain are 1/2"x1/8" and 1/2"x3/16"(the 2nd measurement refers to interior width of chain).
Bicycle chain however it can be purchased locally at most bicycle shops and hardware stores.

See pic below this is my conversion  36v 20amp battery gives this trike 350w with a upgraded controller which is plenty of power for a trike   it has 6 speed gears as well it will easily do 25km/h + and it has a good range

I think these sizes are more suited for the chain. I haven't bothered to use mine for anything yet, but it's heavier duty because of the RPM it needs to endure. A standard bicycle chain will work, but you will stretch alot of them and break them at times due to the torque

Anyway I still say that they are made with the correct sprockets, maybe GM can offer them with a bicycle sprocket as an alternative :S

This may help any one buying BLT 500w to 800w Tricycle Motors , Thay come with a none standed Bicycle sprocket 420  1/2"  5/16"  1/4" 0.227" which is 1/16" wider  so you will need 420 chain
Torque or load is this same as bicycle chain at 810 lbs but wider roller means less wear

The Gearing is just right it pulls up hills very well
9 teeth on motor 36 teeth on rear wheel it pulls better than a 48v Magic Pie  
It's about 5km/h slower than Magic Pie    
The BLT 800w BLDC motor is as powerfull as a 48v Magic Pie Np  
The BLT 800w  motor ,I would recommend this type or trike type conversion

Hey I was wondering about this too, Who42 can you still go over square road gutters with this bike now? The ground clearance looks a little short

How does it sound? The motor sounds good maybe a little louder than a Magic Pie but that heavy duty 420 chain makes a bit of noise but it seems to be settling in and its less noisy now its the small sprocket on the motor has some sharp edges from the machining it should wear in ok

Yes np. I wanted the bike to have that lowered look but I will be changing the handle bars to ape hangers and maybe put a disc brake up front

Regen braking gives a little bit of a jerk when its first starts

But apart from that it gets a lot of good looks and smiles from people LOL  

I Just gave the small sprocket on the motor a bit of a touch up with a file and sand blasted the sharp edges. its a bit quieter now its not grabbing the chain now , the Diameter is so small the chain was having a hard time leaving the sprocket. The ironic thing is the thicker 420 sprocket on the BLT 800 motor was supposed to have less wear but its so roughly cut it was causing more wear and noise LOL
