expensive almost $2k to build an 8C 72V 20 ah kit ... but Very light under 10kg

If so check out EMTB. They use Headway packs and cells and they are cheaper than the one on ebay, but look identical.

They have packs already made up that would be cheaper than building your own, although their chargers are more expensive.

If you really need 72v 20ah, you could buy 4 of their 36v 10ah packs @ $390.00 each plus you would need 2 36v chargers (another $100.00) which would be about $1660.00 (plus postage if necessary).

Do you really need all that much capacity (v and a)?

tho I might just have an toggle switch to go between 36v 40AH and 72v 20ah

Do what I did, use dc-dc converters. My bike is 60v. A 36v plus a 24v. I can run it on 36v only or switch on the 24v for 60v (which I do 99% of the time). With the dc-dc converter it makes no difference to the lights.
