Wheelchair motor/controller for walk behind mower?
« on: March 26, 2010, 07:56:34 PM »
I want to avoid a tractor because my electric conversion of a tractor involved moving alot more weight around and complexity then neccessary and eventually finished off the hydro tranny.
I was thinking something like the following but replacing the rear wheel and entire transmission etc with just wheelchair hub motors and the joystick controller?

Blades would be powered seperately. 4mph is fine but does this sound like something a wheelchair setup could handle if the weight was within limits?

Asked on endless-sphere already and nothing.. Just thought I'd give a go here since I was thinking of ordering the motor/joystick combo here along with a mini motor or two for bikes.

Greetings EV
Could you put the back of the mower on a scale?
The wheelchairs are capable of handling "full grown" people.
Could this possibly be heavier than a loaded chair?
I think you have the right idea for pushing it electrically.
Very interesting and timely project!

Keep me posted

You would need two motors, and two speed controllers.

The RC Receiver would be mounted on the handlebars,
and you would use one servo for throttle and one for each
of the two wheel drives for steering.

I would use a transmitter with a built in mixer and set it up
so that TX  Ch-2 (elevator) is sub-trimmed to +50%
(so it's centered) is mixed with
RX=50%+Ch1 and RX=50%+Ch2 so that moving the stick forward
or backwards makes the mower move forwards or backwards.

With TX Ch 1 (Ailerons) subtrim=+50% (so it's centered) and
RX=50%+Ch1 and RX=50%-Ch2 (note opposite signs on mixing)
Then when you push the stick right, the left wheel goes faster,
and when you push the stick left, the right wheel goes faster.

TX Ch3 would go to the throttle servo.

Now all you need is a lawn chair and a cooler of beer.

BTW, I would put a kill cord around the outside hooked to a
kill switch so that if you lose control it will stop when it hits the car.

This is my first time to see an electric wheelchair like this. Many disabled persons would definitely benefit from the said wheelchair. I think it is better if you will put 2 joysticks on the left and right corner for better performance.
