It doesn't hurt the motor or controller if you use....?
« on: December 09, 2009, 11:41:55 PM »
Sensorless control constantly..

The hall sensor wires on my motor got sheared off. So the only wires I could connect to were the phase wires.

Will it hurt the motor or controller if used on a constant basis in this way?

I also noticed the efficiency of the motor has increased almost 33% since I've changed to sensorless mode on the magic controller.

where as before ( flat ground / no wind ) it would take 6-7 amps to stay at 18mph, now it's only 4 - 5 amps?

Any reason why that might be?

Sensorless can be a little unreliable at times.  You will see increase of efficiency when on flats as the switching is done from the phase detection and IMO is faster and advanced timing in function.  You just may lose out with the take off or may lose sync occasionally and in some configurations loss of power on take off's and great power when moving average speed..

If motor gets hot sensor less can be a bad thing as inductance due to odd resistance that may vary on uneven wound phases.

There is no reason your controller would last less longer on sensor-less mode and good reason it should last long.  However if it loses sync heat can build up fast in the motor and much force on the magnets may cause damage.

If your motor is running better in sensor less then it is all good.

How is efficiency on take off.

Bring it on

I have to get the motor moving first (only like a foot) and then it is a little rough for the first 5 feet and then smooths out quickly, which I would expect with sensorless.

Hi I`m new to this stuff and I think one of my hall sensors are U/S can and how do I run my motor in sensorless mode? :-\

Hi and welcome,

You forgot to mention which motor and speed controller you have.

If you have a Magic Pie or the BAC-028xP controller and one of the HSB hubs it should work automatically.

How to work with motor hall-sensor malfunctions:
The controller will detect motor hall-sensor failure and make 2 beeps of sound, and then it automatically
enters into sensorless control mode. Turn the throttle to run the motor. You may need to push/pedal the
ebike or vehicle a bit in case the motor does not move from stall (This is sensorless control limitation, but
happens seldom).

If you are using a mini motor, it probably won't be possible to run it in sensorless mode, as the motor may need to be turned before the controller can power it in sensorless mode, and this can't be done with most mini motors as the freewheel device inside prevents the wheel from turning the motor.
