Drive direction ??
« on: March 22, 2011, 03:30:11 PM »
Hi Everybody,

I have just received the MP kit and installed.
I need the disc brake at left side of cause. Everythin gis fine

But the motor only turns reverse, in wrong direction.

I used USB cable to change direction via interface but no result.

So I don't know what to do.

Does anybody has an idea ?

Many thanks

Pete

Are you sure the motor is not in backwards? Is it a front or rear motor. Can you provide some pictures?

Hi, thank you for reply.

It is a MP with internal controller.

I will make photo later.-

Thx

Weird! The stator cover (middle part) with the turbine look, should look like it's clockwise directional

See on this pic, the middle of the motor is forward directional, while my cast (outer) section is different front to back !! I think I like the front motor style better.

Lucky 'Who42' pic gave me a sigh of relief as it is the same on his :D

Hopefully it's something simple.. But to fix it would you just remove the casing and push the stator out to swap it? I always wondered if I should do that on the rear to make it look like the front haha.

Even though that's a pain, it would be quicker maybe cheaper to do than shipping/warranty etc.

Either that or be unique and ride backwards hehe :D

Sir

I reserve my apology in advance and it's an obvious point but just in case .... are you sure the wheel is on the right way?

I ask because you mention the need/cause for the brake disk position??

is this an external controller, with 3 phase wires and hall wires

In which case colour of the phase and halls may be incorrect....making motor go backwards ?

internal or external controller

Monkey, as far as I'm aware, all of the hub "turbine" patterns face the same direction, so they rotate in a forward direction on the right side and in a reverse direction on the left side. In which case fitting the wheel the wrong way around would not change the direction of the "turbine" pattern.

On your wheels, the rim itself is offset to the right on the rear, and to the left on the front. This offset was incorporated into the 20" cast wheels following the suggestion to enable correct centring of the cast rims.

Ginge, he's already answered that question:

It is a MP with internal controller.

Hopefully the photo will show whether it's a front or rear wheel, cast or spoked and which side the wires exit from. ;)
When we have enough information it will be much easier to suggest the best solution to this problem.

As the internal controller is based on a similar circuit board to the external one, it might be possible to recalibrate the controller to change the direction of the motor, in the same way as the external controllers could be recalibrated for use with non GM motors.

Hi, thank you for replys.

I have the motor below, 20" cast. regular direction, just like the photo below.

Oooh another cast fan :D
I'd like to see the bike you installed this on?

I hope the factory worker who installed your controller was not color blind and soldered the phase wires to the wrong color causing it to spin the wrong way.

And you say the reverse function does not work? The reverse is enabled by connecting the yellow wire to black (gnd) normally, this is done with the throttle switch push on/off switch. Could you try this?

And have you got a pic of the bike :D

Ginge, I really don't know how to break this to you gently, so I won't.

You really need to find another forum if marriage is your goal! ;D

So, I guess it's a front wheel then Pete?

Do the wires also exit from the brake disc side as expected?

As the internal controller is based on a similar circuit board to the external one, it might be possible to recalibrate the controller to change the direction of the motor, in the same way as the external controllers could be recalibrated for use with non GM motors.

This is what I meant:

Motor phase Calibrating (Do not use it unless your motor is not from GoldenMotor):
The controller can work brushless motors with different phase angles other than defaulted 120 degree.
Below are procedures to let controller match the motor phases:

  • Cut-off power to controller and motor
  • Simultaneously, grip and hold power brake lever, hold throttle in maximum speed position, press the cruise control button and turn on the power switch (using battery key)
  • Connect battery power to the system, release throttle, release brake lever, release cruise control button.
  • Listen for two beeps, then turn the motor/wheel forward and reverse once

If you hear a single beep, the motor phase calibrating has been successfully completed, otherwise, try swapping any two of the three motor phase wires, and repeat the above steps.

If this procedure works with the internal controller, it might be the solution to the problem, but I haven't tried it!
