Can you safely run a Magic Pie 4 on a 52v battery pack?

Hi
I cannot say for the MP4, but I guess the same limits of MP3 is still valid for the MP4: The internal FETs have a 60V (D-S) limit, quite like the condensators with 63V at max. Going over that range can kill the controller (FETs) in a few microseconds and warranty is lost that way as well.

What ist 52V in what chemistry? LiIon have a 3,6 or 3,7V nominal voltag, which varies from 3,2 up to 4,2V (working range). LiFePO4 can do 2,8 to 3,6V or liPo from 3,4 to 4,2V. So the "how many cells are in series" is important to give an advice.
Important is the max voltage of the pack at any charging. Using recuperation might be very dangerous as lots of internal controllers were killed with a full battery and then using the regen brake.

Why that high voltage? Do you use such small rims to need such a high rotation rate?

Cheers
Sam

The Magic Pie 4 will run fine on a 52V pack using the default 48V battery voltage setting as long as the battery is capable of supplying enough current (25~30A continuous).

If the battery's maximum continuous output is lower, you will have to reduce the controller's "Battery drawn current (A)" setting to prevent the battery's cells and/or BMS from being overloaded.

As Sam has already mentioned, the Magic Pie controllers should not be used with batteries which have a maximum charged (not nominal) voltage that exceeds 60V, therefore any of the following "48V" packs can be used:
  • A 40 cell NiMH/NiCd battery pack with a nominal voltage of 48V and a maximum charging voltage of 58V.
  • A 24 cell Lead Acid battery pack with a nominal voltage of 48V and a maximum charging voltage of 58V.
  • A 13 cell LiPo/LiMn pack with a nominal voltage of 48.1V and a maximum charging voltage of 54.6V.
  • A 14 cell LiPo/LiMn pack with a nominal voltage of 51.8V and a maximum charging voltage of 58.8V.
  • A 16 cell LiFePO4 pack with a nominal voltage of 52.8V and a maximum charging voltage of 58.4V.

Hello Alan ... Is the 52 volt OK for the MP5 also ? I have the black pie 1000 watt and am thinking of upgrading ...Can the 52 volt be used without any reprograming ??   Thanks Don J.

Hi Don,

All of the Magic Pies and Smart Pies can be used with any of these "48V~53V" batteries:

As long as the voltage setting is already set to 48V in the controller there should be no need for any reprogramming.  ;)
