My MP4 Died this morning
« on: March 15, 2016, 06:55:13 PM »
Sigh, its a sad day for me, and just a couple weeks out of warrenty  :-\

Everything was going well. I stopped at a red light, and when it turned greeen, I throttled up to be on my way, when I heard a 'Tick tick tick' came from the motor.  I stopped and did a quick visual, but nothing seemed out of the ordanary. I did a couple little tests but it still made the ticking noises. (cycled power on/off and disconnected the battery ect...)

I shut off the battery power, and started peddling the rest of the way into work.
There was no ticking when I peddled, only when I used the throttle did it tick.

Well, the further I went, the harder is was to peddle, and now it seems like it is constantly "magnetically engaged"
The wheel still spins, but there is huge resistance to it, even with the battery disconneted. No way to ride it in this state.

I wont have any more detail until I get home to inspect it further.
Hopefully it will be an easy fix  :'(

If only a short time after the warranty period contacting your vendor immediately and sharing the scenario might gain you enough traction to either get a replacement or some type of concession if only to be build up more goodwill for the GM brand.

A good way to handle this is contact technical support and offer to take many pictures and even ship the hub motor back to them for inspection. If there are no clear signs of abuse or mishandling there is a chance of getting your motor repaired or replaced. I don't have any relationship with GM or its vendors, but some manufacturers tend to have more leniency and even a grace period even after their warranty expiry date--all case-by-case. I have had very good experiences with motorcycle and car dealerships for repairs after my original warranty recently expired.

During the installation of my pie the two power wires from the motor came in contact with each other.  The motor was almost impossible to turn in this state, I thought something was wrong until I discovered the touching wires.  Maybe your power wires are shorted somewhere like maybe where they exit the motor because that seems like a place where the cable can be abraded easily by the spinning motor housing.  Just a guess.

Thanks guys, a support ticket has been created.
When I get home tonight, I'll do a quick inspection of the wires.

I'm flying out tomorrow for a trip to Ontario... so it will be a couple weeks before I get right into it,

Chris

Thank you for your advice!
I spoke with Gary, and he will cover this issue under warranty!

After a bit of trouble shooting steps, it was determined that the controller was at fault.
So Gary sent me a video with how to remove it, and low and behold, one of the lead
wires came disconnected off the control card and had arced inside the housing.

So I will be shipping the board back for replacement. There is a small chance the twist
throttle may be faulty as well, so its going back for testing too.

Thanks,
Chris

@OP,

I guess these are some good reasons buying from a reputable vendor like GM-Canada! Great to hear the issue will get sorted out, and really great to hear about Gary standing behind the products that he sells.
