Battery charger for MP2
« on: November 28, 2012, 07:51:04 PM »
Having the week from hell, left my bag on the train with my GM 48v charger in it... obviously no one has handed it in, so i'm screwed :( :( :( need to charge my battery desperately (48v 12ah Golden motor battery with round 1-pin phono-type socket) is there any way of doing this without a official charger? Or does anyone know where I can pick up a cheap charger?? Has to be cheap as i'm skint in the run up for christmas (this has not helped matters!) Had one bike stolen now got no charger really not my winter so far :( grateful for any assistance...

It might help to start with "what country are you in?"

This one is cheap, but if you want it fast you have to pay for express and that isn't cheap.

Thanks for that Lollandster that one may have to do! Are they reliable? Have you purchased anything from them before?? And what is the name for the DC connector on the 12ah battery (they require this info) I have the round single hole connector on my battery (like a phono socket in a/v cable... not sure what that connector jack type is called? Thanks!

Please save your money and buy a good charger.

I have those charger (bigger watts) none of them are any good.

I had to modify them for reliability; better cooling, thermal paste, soldering etc etc.....

They are called DC barrel jacks, or connectors. I'm not really sure what size it is though. I just measured my GM chargers male barrel jack as best I could with a ruler and it looks to be a 10mm but they are inside diameter and center pin size specific aswell so it may not be easy to find. It might be quickest to just buy any 48v life charger and take your battery into some electronics stores and try and find a fit, then splice it on to the new charger, just make sure you don't mix the polarity. On my battery the center pin is positive, I cant imagine yours would be different but check it with a multi meter anyways.

I checked some specs online and the 24v GM charger is listed as a LBC-24U2, the 36v is listed as a LBC-36U2, and the 48v is an LBC-48U3. My 36v GM charger is listed on the charger itself as a MCR0236NL.

A Google search on the MCR model got nothing, but a search on the LBC-48U3 got a few, this one in particular here might interest you.

I also Googled 10mm barrel jack and didn't come up with much. If anyone else can chime in on the specifics of these plugs that would be great, I would also like to know as I need a higher amp charger and cant find one with this large barrel plug.

I think I have the same charger plug as you do and if so you should have no problems getting the right one from greenbikekit.com or bmsbattery.com . As for the quality, you get what you pay for so don't expect $100 of quality from a $17 charger. I have the cheapest charger from bmsbattery and it is yet to break. No heating problems on my small 2A charger. I do hear you shouldn't transport them too much though since they are poorly soldered and components may work them self loose.
The plug I have is the same dimensions as a RCA plug (what you called phono type) with just a shorter center pin. It is not a barrel jack I think. I'm sure you can use a RCA plug instead with a low amperage charger like this if you can't source the right plug, but I am sure they have it.

Your charging voltage will likely be 58.4V if its LiFePo4 16cell
I think you'll get the right plug if you write RCA as the DC plug type.
