Is running in sensorless mode bad for MPII?
« on: May 31, 2012, 09:42:26 PM »
Hi all,

I have a MPII with external controller which has been working fantastically!...  Until I went modding stuff and I think I clipped one of the hall sensor wires.  Anyhow, its now running in sensorless mode, which is confirmed by the two beeps when the power is applied, and not being able to take off from a dead stop.  I don't have time yet to diagnose and re-run the sensor wires (which is a pain in the bike seat).

Question is, if I run the bike in sensorless mode, will that damage anything or degrade the motor/controller over time?
Should I leave the hall sensors plugged into the controller, or take it out?

I'm running on 48v 10ah SLA, with a mod in progress to add to a total of 48v 27ah  ;D ;D ;D ;D   Lotsa welding!  Pics to come (after I get confirmed)

Thanks,
-Jonny

Hi Jonny andto the forum.

Running in sensorless mode should not cause a problem for either the controller or the motor, although if the wires are damaged, it might be safer to leave the hall sensors unplugged from the controller until you are able to rectify the problem.

Sounds good, Thank you!

I havent mounted the horn on my bike yet, so it was a surprise to me when I was sitting at a dead stop and the bike didnt go :-\  I later attached the horn to see if the beeps beeped, and they did...

On a side note, my 48v 10ah SLA only gets me about 8 miles before they die.  I like to ride full throttle all the time, and I only peddle from dead stops to about 5 mph (which is like 2 peddle rotations :P ).  I'm a flatlander with one small hill to get to my house.  Our forest preserve district has gravel trails that take us from Wisconsin to Chicago, and 80% of my ride time to and from work is on those lovely trails.  I hope to get 20 miles per charge with my 27ah SLAs, but that is a work in progress.  I never thought it would be so hard to add 80lbs of batteries to a bike  :o
