Controller getting really hot 1000W Golden
« on: October 31, 2008, 01:58:23 PM »
Hi I have a 1000 watts Golden Rear wheel with a Ping 48v 20ah and the Regen Controller. The bike is great the power is surprising. I had an issue with the fuse holder melting but that was easy to fix.

My problem is that the controller and the battery pack are inside a hard plastic case, The bike looks really neat and clean you can't see any wires. Looks almost like a regular bike. However the controller gets really hot. Hot enough to almost burn your fingers. I'm thinking of adding small fans to ventilate the case.

Is anyone having issues with a hot running controller ?

How hot can this controller safely get ?

I want to keep it inside the case for water proofing and because it looks really professional the way it is now.

I have much the same setup as yours, my controller gets hot if I use full throttle for long periods, I'd guess about 60-70° C and about 40-50° C when just cruising. My controller is exposed to plenty of airflow though. Excessive heat will usually shorten the life of electronic components. Fans may help but it would be best to also allow some ventilation in and out of your case, or mount the controller outside.
