« on: May 14, 2011, 04:41:01 PM »

First go and 100m and ........ 9 spoke broken  ! and only 2 spare

Spoke are too thin for 110 Kg (105Kg + battery). Do I need ballon tyres ?

Is there anybody with the same problem ?

Hi Styx

Which thickness were / are your spokes? 2.0 mm or 2.34 mm?

I don't know I order 26" wheel kit.

Perhaps the wheel wasn't really ok and goldenmotor just mount on rim.

Now, I have to get good spokes for the good man and  .... find somebody to do a good job for me !

I think it sounds like a bad wheel. :-\ Did you check the spokes before you put the wheel on or were you too excited to get out for a ride? ;) It is usually always a good idea to check a new wheel and tighten if necessary.

I'm also pretty new to this forum so I am not aware of other cases. But I do not think that the weight you're talking about should have enough strength to break a "good wheel".

I would use 2.34 mm (13 gauge) spokes to a wheel with hubmotor. So I hope goldenmotor also has used 13g, otherwise I would recommend you to use it.

But Bikemad and the other veterans on this forum have probably more experience on this and will be able to help you better than I.

Check out the latter part of Ginge's wheel building post for more details regarding broken spokes.

If your spokes are too loose, then the rim will do an "egg shape" as you cycle, moving the spokes and the flange within the rim, leading to early metal fatigue

One of the best bits of advice I got was when you "ping" it, it should chime like a bell, not sound dull like a bell muffled.......

GM are definitely shipping very loose spokes these days

the diagnosis of my father, an old bicycle mechanic and specialist spoke wheels.

Lot's of laugh when he see how was the mount of spoke and bolts !

So,

He'll make larger (3MM DT) and longer crossed spoke wheel with good bolts and medium glue.

As he said, he was  used to use the same method for motocross, tandem, monocycle or sulky (for horse race) wheels with lot's of charge or power

So second test of magicpie in a week...

The first wheel is with crossed sopke and and the second picture there is only right spoke

Do you think goldenmotor should be king enough and tell us why there is 2 different mount ?

The first spoke pattern picture is MP1 the second spoke pattern picture is MP2. With MP1 there were many issues with loose or broken spokes and I had many request for spare spokes. Since MP2 spoking pattern (designed by Alan by the way) I rarely have any request for spare spokes and I have probably sold 10 times more MP2 the MP1. The only issue is the same for any GM wheel, many wheels leave the factory with the spokes to loose.

Original MK I Magic Pies had the crossed spokes which produced curved/bent spokes because of the excessive angle between the spokes and the rim:

All of the current MK II built up Magic Pies use a revised spoke pattern:

Nearly 15 months ago I posted several suggestions relating to improvements to the existing spoke pattern on the MK I Magic Pies to reduce the excessive angle between the spoke and rim which, as Gary has already mentioned, was causing lots of problems with spokes. GM tested my design and subsequently implemented the new spoke layout into all of their current spoked Magic Pies.

the diagnosis of my father, an old bicycle mechanic and specialist spoke wheels.

Lot's of laugh when he see how was the mount of spoke and bolts !

So,

He'll make larger (3MM DT) and longer crossed spoke wheel with good bolts and medium glue.

I'm so pleased that I've been able to help your father, normally I tend to just help forum members. :D

On a more serious note, if he's going to cross the spokes, it will double the spokes angle from vertical (radial) from 9° to 18°, which is far too much to allow most spoke nipples to correctly seat in the rim:

If he looks closely at my modified drawing attached below, he might want to consider changing his mind. ;)

If he still decides to cross the spokes, they'll need to be at least 8mm longer than the original ones.
Please post some pictures showing how he overcomes the excessive spoke angle. I tried slightly realigning the holes in the rim slightly to allow my spokes to align better, but these alloy rims are not very forgiving and it did cause a few very tiny cracks around some of the spoke holes.

I look forward to seeing the rebuilt wheel and hopefully hearing some positive feedback on your Magic Pie experience.
