Programming adapter PI-400 with software PI-800?
« on: January 19, 2018, 08:13:14 AM »
Hello Forum!

I have bought the following items from GoldenMotor:

-) 3kW BLDC-Motor Fan-Cooled HPM3000B 48V
-) 3KW BLDC Motor Controller VEC200 48V
-) PI-400/VEC FOC Controller Programming Kit

The motor is running and everything is OK at the Controller-Motor-Side.

Now I wanted to try to adjust some parameters, so I have downloaded the programming software PI-800.
But I'm not able to get a connection.

-) The USB-Serial driver was installed automatically after connecting the adapter.
-) In the Hardware-List the adapter is also shown with COM-Port 5 and the status is OK.
-) When I want to connect to the controller with the PI-800-program over the chosen COM-Port 5, then I get a message with Timeout.

After reading in this forum, I have tried different ways like described in the Youtube-Video from GoldenMotor Canada.
So I press "Connect" and after the message appears, I put power at the controller. But there is no "OK"-message coming like in the video.

-) What should I do? Does someone have experience with this (common) problem?
-) Why is the software called PI-800 and the adapter is PI-400? Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for your help
Wolfgang

Hello there

Two things come to mind.

1 - Try connecting with the battery power off or disconnected
2 - If the battery power was on the capacitors in the controller can take a ridiculous amount of time to drop off before it will be completely off so you can try to connect again.

Hello Gary!

Thank you for your answer.

I have tried several times connecting to the controller with switched off power.
When I connect the programming adapter, the small red lamp at the controller is flashing 16 times.
For this blinking starting, only the read and black wire (3.3 Volt) is needed.

I have tried also when the controller was switched off over the night and tried it the next day, but it's the same.

Please another question Gary:
In your videos at Youtube you describe how to connect to a controller.
At the older versions you made it with trying to connect when powered off and after the error message you power on.
On newer versions you first power on and then press Connect.

How do I know, if I have the newer or the older version of the controller?
Is this procedure only for the Magic Pie or also for the VEC200? Maybe there is a difference?

Hi

The videos you are watching are for the early MP4/SP4 controllers. Even though they use the same software they are not related to VEC200 controllers.

The controller you have you need to connect to it unpowered. At least that is my experience with customer feedback and resolutions. Unfortunately, I have never had an issue connecting so troubleshooting your situation is difficult.

Does the controller work?

Hi gary

Yes the controller itself is working fine, but I need to change some parameters (motor brake, speed cruise and so on).

OK so if I need to connect unpowered, then I think the 16x blinking of the red led on the controller means "programming mode".
This programming mode is entered at the controller, if the supply wires black and red are connected, the TxD and RxD (green and yellow) are not necessary for entering the programming mode.

So I think that there is a problem with the green and yellow wire inside the USB-connector.

I already have written with GoldenMotor in China about this problem, but I don't get any answer from them.
The support of GoldenMotor in China is not very good, I also don't get an answer on my question "What is the purpose of the high brake signal?".
The only answer was "Don't care".

I think the High brake signal is used when the vehicle already has a 12V brake light feed from the brake pedal/lever to power the stop lamp rather than grounding the brake signal wire which is typically used to operate the regen/power cut off.

It sounds like this, but how can I be sure and not that something is damaged at the controller if I connect directly the voltage here?
Why is GoldenMotor saying I shouldn't care about this signal and I should not use it?
Now I use a comparator-circuit to get the brake signal from the brake light feed.
For this it would be good if GoldenMotor provide more technical information about their products.
The signal and function description is very poor.

About my programming problem:
It is still the same and I have sent GoldenMotor a video with the programming procedure as they wanted, but there is still no answer from GoldenMotor about my problem.
It is very difficult to stay with GoldenMotor at future projects, if there is nearly no support...
