I believe he now uses LiFePO4 batteries to power the anti-gravity unit but still prefers to use the reindeer for propulsion.
It's not just for aesthetics, but also because Santa prefers the improved acceleration and stopping power that the traditional four hoof drive
(per reindeer) produces compared to the ion propulsion drive unit, especially on those snow covered roofs.
