How to change controller MP2??
« on: July 10, 2014, 07:23:06 PM »
I would like to know if someone have a instructions about how to change internal controller in MP2. I just burn out my controller... I not sure if the problem was that maybe the brakes cables where shift... maybe someone knows about that??
I decide to do a deep clean of my bike last week and put all together yesterday. I drove out and was not a problem, but suddenly the motor start to vibrate. I decide to drive slowly to find out what could be the problem and then was like the motor brake and come 5 beeps. After that the is just giving 5 beeps and the motor is like brake.

The only I could imagine is damage controller... so I try to check how difficult could be change controller. I oppen the motor for the cable side and I cut the cable to be able to see inside and found out that was the wrong side :(
So I better ask for some recommendation of how to to that.

Thank for helping

Sincerely

Replacing the controller involves removing the right hand cover to gain access to the controller.

Before you disconnect any wires, you need to either take some detailed photographs, or draw a detailed diagram, showing the existing wiring colours and all the soldered connections onto the controller so you know where they all go.

Then you will need to carefully unsolder all of the wires from the controller.

With the wires disconnected, you can then undo the Allen bolts holding the semicircular heat sink plate onto the stator and carefully lift the old controller/heatsink assembly away.

The new controllers usually come already mounted on a heatsink, so there should be no need to remove the old controller from the old heatsink.

Carefully slip the new controller and heatsink assembly onto the stator making sure that all the wires are in the correct position and are not trapped between the heatsink and the stator, and then bolt it in place.

Solder the wires to the new controller in the same positions as the old one (refer to your photo or diagram to ensure the wires are all correctly connected).

Refit the motor side cover and carefully tighten the cover bolts making sure the cover is properly centred and tightened down evenly.

I usually test the motor at this stage to make sure it works correctly before refitting the wheel to the bike.

Thanks Allan.

Do you know when is the best time to replace the cable. I cut my cable at the level of the cover so I am need a new one, but I was thinking to use another type of cable as I don't use the plugs of GMs cable.I don't know if the GMs cable have some electronic in the little square before the battery cable and controller are split. Is it possible use another cable??

sincerely

Pablo

Hi Pablo,

The little square rubber piece is just a junction unit for the wires, there might be a circuit board in there, but no electronics to worry about.

If the cut cable is too short to be reinserted and reconnected inside the motor, you might find it difficult to replace the single multi-core cable with separate wires of a suitable gauge as the slot they all need to go through is pretty small.

You might also want to consider fitting an external controller if you cannot find another internal one. ;)
