Offcenter Magic Pie 3
« on: December 16, 2012, 05:20:00 PM »
i read that several persons have the same problem, an offcenter Magic Pie 3
makes strange noise and the left side of the rear bike, after 1 hour in small hills bouncing ALWAYS NEED TO BE CHECK
because the screw goes downs almost 1 cm!

this is very dangerous!

it´s not a question of tight aperture, as this is made by a professional mechanic by SPECIALIZED BIKES.

the axes of Magic Pie is ROTATING but also WITH TRANSLATION.

If a put a pencil in the axe of MP3 it will not make a "point", but it will make a CIRCLE!

Anyone with the same problem?
how to repair it?

should I activate the warranty?
this is a persistent problem and it appears in the 1dt week of buying the bike, last month (November 2012).

My bike is SEB-350L prepared by golden motor (shanghai) was bought by internet from golden motor (shanghai) and there by sea to Portugal.

i`m from portugal, and the portuguese dealer ended his company...

Hi Hugo, did you email David at GM China like I suggested in my reply to your PM? If so, what did he say?

Can you please provide photos showing the screw that "goes down almost 1 cm" as I'm not sure which screw you are referring to.

I'm also confused by this statement, are you rotating the pencil within the fixed axle, or has the wheel been removed from the bike to allow the axle and pencil to rotate together?

As your bike was purchased from GM direct, your warranty is with them, so your local Portuguese dealer would not have been responsible, even if his company was still in business.

Hello!
I did email David at GM China like you suggested and he authorize my bike mechanic to open Magic Pie,
after some instructions he didn´t find the problem, but with some oil in almost all places (not electrics...) the sound (tuk, tuk, tuk) now only appears from time to time, normally after maximum accelerations or some small jumps in the grass.

but the problem is still there.

Thanks for the help.

As atcspaul reccommend the modification for the washers
could be one way to avoid an accident, as the tyre could jump out from the bike.

i think it´s a way to reduce the problem, but is not the cause. the right side of the MP3 have some oscilations, but the top M5? don't move.
The left side of MP3 have more oscilations and with strong apperture  after 1 hour riding in open field it will goes down almost 1 cm.

the 2 pics, right side the axe is in top position, the left side of MP3 is almost 1 cm down.

at this moment I will do the modification for the washers, bringing more security, but the efficience is not the same from the motor because we are trying to force a position that is not natural to the axe of rotation of MP3.

or i`m wrong as I don´t find the  1st problem and not the consequence (left side down)
and how to fix it.

(about the pencil...i was making an example how my problem is... maybe was to much :)

If the axle becomes loose enough to move within the dropouts there is a very real risk of the dropouts breaking completely, resulting in the frame being ruined and the wiring being torn out of the motor, probably causing injuries to you at the same time. :o

As the rear dropouts are aluminium on your frame, you really should have some torque arms fitted to prevent the axle from moving and working loose due to the constant changes in the direction of the torsional force acting upon the axle as it is repeatedly subjected to hard accelerating and then heavy braking.

I strongly recommend that you read Justin's excellent Torque Arm Introduction for more information regarding torque arms.

I only sell the TorqArmRev3. I find it works in all situations front and rear. The TorqArmRev4 is much thicker and takes up more space on the axle. This limits the amount of thread the nut can grab onto in many situations.

Here I used TorqArmRev3 on the front wheel of my TRI-DRIVE

Here I used TorqArmRev3 on the Rear wheel of my TRI-DRIVE

If you look closely you can even see them on the trailer motor.

This is one side of the rear motor on my Tandem. You can see if the torque arm was any thicker there would be very little for the nut to grab on the axle.

The other side I used parts from two TorqArmRev3 to make a special hookup on my Tandem. It may not have been necessary but I did not like the way the wheel mounts. Since I ride this mainly with my daughter, its safety first!

Before:

After:

This last picture I still had to add one hose clamp and tighten everything up but Im sure you can see where I was going with this.

Here is my Tandem before the torque arms.

So in my opinion the TorqArmRev3 is the best for most situations.

Gary

I have the rev4 torque arm on both mine and a frieds bike and although it is a bit thick it does fit with a couple of threads to spare. My friend insisted to try without torque arm at first because his frame was steel, but those small vertical dropouts bended open and he bought a torque arm after the wheel had worked loose and locked the tire, effectively stranding him. I'm guessing all the offroading is to blame, but a powerfull motor like the mp3 probably shouldn't be installed in vertical dropouts without a torque arm. just my opinion.
