MP III won't run
« on: April 25, 2012, 10:02:27 AM »
Hi all,
I just got my MP3 on Thursday got it all set up and it ran great for a few days. Yesterday it was left out in some mild rain and it was ok for a bit. I made a stop at the grocery store and when I went to leave the motor was a no go. I tried pedalling with the motor on and it felt like the regen was on. I thought water may have gotten in somewhere, so I brought it into the garage to dry out but this morning it is still acting up. I've tried disconnecting the brake cables but that didn't help either.
Any thoughts?

Hi Andy andto the forum.

Unfortunately it sounds like the controller has failed, I suggest you contact your supplier and explain that is has stopped working completely and is now difficult to turn.
If you purchased it direct from GM China, you should email David at GM (wyh@goldenmoptor.com) and explain the problem to him instead.

Please let us know the outcome.

Alan

I purchased it from Gary at GM.ca so he should be able to help.
When the motor does engage it sounds alot like this problem http://goldenmotor.com/SMF/index.php?topic=4295.0
the motor runs but making alot of noise then will cut-out. Cycle the power off and on then it will run again (making noise) then cut-out again.  :-\

Well, now she's gone for a real crap. I separated all the connections on Tuesday sprawed them with a little WD40 to eliminate any moisture and left it till this morning. I got up early reconnected everything, gave it a test and it seemed like it was good to go. Battery was showin 52v on the multimeter (48v lifepo with a good charge). Throttle/Motor was responding well with minimal noise. So I decided to take it to work. I got about 3 blocks without issue and all of a sudden the regen came on unexpectedly. I disconnected the brake cables to the motor still, regen on and no power. I cycled the key switch off and on and hear what sounded like an arcing in the switch...now theres no lights on the throttle and the motor is still stuck in regen. I turned the key off again, disconnected the battery cable and the connection from the motor to the throttle/brakes etc. Motor is still stuck in regen even without any power. So now lucky me gets to power pedal my bike back home and call a cab to get to work.
So now what??
I'm starting to feel like I've bought an $1100 paperweight. :(

This sounds to me like the motor is shorted.

On the way down, when I hit breaks, I hurt a noise and since then magic quit. I then checked that one of the FETs or the capacitor shorted one of the three phases. Only when I disconnected RGB cables from the controller, the motor started moving fine.

Rather than rebuild the internal controller I just bought a lyen controller.

I was able to contact Gary last night. I'll be doing just what you said Alan. remove the controller and sending it back for replacement. In this case along with the key switch and throttle.

Hi Andy and Welcome,
I too had a similar issue with a internal controller calling it quits just weeks from initial purchase, unfortunately I bought mine from GM China... to make a long story short; I purchased a replacement controller from Gary at GM Canada and made sure to seal the controller inside by using elmer's glue to [maybe] keep out water/moisture... hope it helps.

while your add it, make an effort to replace the screws that house the internal controller, they are very prone to trip and very hard to take out if that's the case.
If you're not asking questions, you're not doing it right!
