internal vs external contoller
« on: August 17, 2011, 12:48:08 PM »
What are peoples experience with contollers internal vs external ( I am thinking external because easier to replace if it fails)- I purchased a non GM kit off ebay in April - 48v 1000w - ran great 48km/h (rear wheel 26 inch) Broke after a month - was told the controller was fried - bought new one - unit works but will only do 30km/h and the motor sounds bad.  Spokes are popping too - poor quality - thinking of buying GM Magic Pie - worried about recent talk of current limits being low and low top speeds.  What can I expect with a 48v 1000 Magic Pie kit?  No interest in 32km/h as I would just as well buy a commercial ebike.  Any advice on kits/contollers would be welcome.  Anything I should know.  Planning to purchase within the week.  Thanks

Ed

with an internal controller, about 750w output max, with an external you will output about 1000w max...with a third party controller, you could output up to 2000-3000 watt (risky though)

the pie will do, on a 26" wheel, about 25mph (40km/h), unless you get a controller that can "overspeed" the motor, like a Kelly or infineon controller

Recent thoughts on wattages and speeds recorded on a Cycle Analyst

48v Internal Magic Pie - About 800 watts - top speed on a 26 inch wheel about 36-38 Kph
48v External Magic Pie - About 1000 watts - top speed on a 26 inch wheel about 38-40 Kph
48v External HBS pro 901 - About 1000 watts - top speed on a 26 inch wheel about 48-50 kph
