Vurtual throttle idea - just sharing thoughts :)
« on: January 08, 2011, 09:07:58 PM »
Hi All..............( beer spam alert)
I do a lot of miles ( 1000 per month) and im sure you all know that on long hours, the throttle is a pain in the thumb, so here is a future plan when ive got time..., but to share the idea with you all
what if, you didnt have to push a throttle, just move your fingers accross the handlebars to increase or decrease throttle, nothing to press, just magnetic force ( minority report throttle anyone)
( gary, this isnt why I want the hall sensors, honest, any hall will do for this, I just want the GM ones for spares for compatability)
and the technical details
needed.....1 microswitch....1 hall sensor...2 magnets, 2 finger holders " rings" for the magnets, elastic, cycling glove ?
now the problem is that without any input, the hall sensor will default to 2-2.5v output...if you apply one magnetic pole it increases, if you apply the opposite magnetic pole, it decreases....

somewhere easy to reach on the left handlebar, embedded in the plastic grip, you place a switch (dead mans handle)to enable the hall sensor 5V feed( which is embedded under the grip on the right hand side, making sure that your fingers on the right are already in roughly the "Default position"...first finger has a magnet facing the grip with the south pole facing handlebar, next finger ( or 3rd finger) has north facing the same way,....to change throttle, you merely move these fingers left or right, and the throttle will change voltage, no throttle spring to overcome...if you want to stop, you merely let go of the microswitch on the left handlebar, the hall sensor will have no power supply, so will go 0V

now im sure there will be some small diode/resistor/death wish issues to ovecome to enable to range to be within 1-4 volts, and without the practice, this throttle will be no good from a stop for starting with control, but as I said, just sharing the inspiration....for me I will have to make it work, my area is too hilly for cruise, and too long a journey for throttle, so when I start, I will document for the forum

flagon o' cider n Talisker Whisky at my end of this virtual highway so do not think you're on your own. I will have to read over your post a few more times to take it all in, so cannot comment at present. But at first scan it looks like the writings of a mad man...  ;)

mind you, cider and whisky, any thoughts on Magic Pie 16" stabilisers :), could be good for getting home......maybe some tilt sensors to increase the speed on the stabiliser one one side when you lean too much to one side....ah electronics, saviour of the human condition....cheers andrew ( Ginge raises his glass to the imaginary party he is havin in his head ;)

you guys are off ya ears!

Ginge it's called 'Cruise control' .... You throttle to the speed you want, then push a button. To release, push the button again or brakes.
No more sore thumb, and no need to finger bang your handlebars like a questionable symphony orchestra conductor ;)

Awesome idea though!!

I might make an eyebrow sensor, so when you squint you go faster, and if you open your eyes really wide, like when you are surprised it enabled regen brakes to stop you. Then you can ride no hands

hehe

hi Monkey :)

yes indeed it was a good night last night ......glug glug

the problem is that I live in the wilds of the countyside, lots of hills and bends, so cruise control goes on off on off on off etc, cant set a set speed ( other than 10 kmph), hence why I went about the idea above.....

to be really extreme, we could mod one of these

http://gear.ocztechnology.com/products/description/OCZ_Neural_Impulse_Actuator/index.html

lots of air guitar faces to control the motor, how bad could it be  :o

I will get round to the above controller, will let you know how it all goes
