Magic Pie Conversion for TW Bents Recumbent Trike
« on: August 30, 2010, 08:42:07 AM »
Hi, I am a newbie here, but not new to e-bikes.
I have just bought and assembled a TW Bents Artifice recumbent tadpole trike (sold as Actionbent in the U.S.). My intention is to fit an electric conversion kit to the rear wheel. I have been considering Bionx and Ezee kits as I have experienced these on 2 wheels.
The Magic Pie kit looks worthy of consideration, I'm thinking of a 36v kit in a 26" wheel with a 36v 16Ah battery fitted to a rear rack. Ideally, I would like to fit a 9 speed 11 to 32 tooth freewheel. There is 135mm space between the rear dropouts.

I would welcome any suggestions and advice on this project and if a Magic Pie kit would be suitable.

Thanks for looking,

J :)hn

I have done exactly as you said you want to do. I used an earlier model TW Bents. I had to make a new back end because my trike had a quick release rear wheel set up. I mounted the battery on the new backend. I have back problems so I use my trike as 100% electric. If you like I can show some photos.

Thanks Trike,

I would love to see photos and any other info on your setup. Mine has a QR rear wheel, but that would be replaced, so I don't see why the backend needs modification? You could PM me if you prefer Trike.

I have sent a few photos of my trike. I an using the same battery and the 26 inch wheel as you would like to use. I get about 50 km per change. The main thing I was concerned about was the axel of  the Magic Pie wheel fitting properly on the mounting slot. I have a photo of my QR axel mount( I would say yours would be much the same.) The kit is made for the standard type of  bicycle. All of the power of the motor is transfered to the frame thought that point (Via the slotted axel and the special washer). Since I was making the new back I mounted the battery under the seat. I could not buy a 9 speed cassette to fit the wheel so I used a 7 speed cassette and used a 7 speed bar end selector. I am very happy with my Magic Pie Trike , I used to Hand Cycle but my back will not let me any more so this is my escape . I hope I gave you something to think about. Let me know how you go.
