Front motor shakes loose, cable damaged
« on: March 06, 2008, 11:29:07 PM »
I have a problem with my front motor: Even though I fasten the screw-nuts on both sides very heavy, the wheel has 2 times gone loose, and twisted the cable so that the isolation is already damaged. I managed to fix the cable provisorically, but I would rather prefer to open the motor to be able to remove the damaged part (pull the cable a little more inside, it is long enough).

- has anybody come across the problem of loosing the front wheel? Maybe I should put a second counter-screw-nut on each side?

- has anybody opened a motor and tried to pull the cable more inside, removed a peace of it, etc? I am able to work with soldering iron and heat shrink tube.

Users of various kits posting on the Endless Sphere forums recommend torque arms to provide an extra lock on the axle and keep it from spinning in the dropouts.  An extra nut will probably not do what you are expecting it to do.

There is an instructable on how to change the hall sensors inside the motor, so it includes removing the motor cover plates and getting inside.  You should be able to use that.

The cover removal starts with step 3.

could you please name one or two of these forums, search engines seems not to help or I do not search for the correct buzzwords...

recommend torque arms

sounds interesting
translating this to my language leads to some headache
leo.org says this is a "Speiche" which cannot be true in some way..
hope that the forum pointers will help here.

that's what I suspected and that's why I put this question carefully.
I mainly guess that best would be something that simply prevents the wheel from moving from its position AND keep it from spinning in the dropouts.

this really helps, thanks. Especially it makes clear (what was not at all clear for me), that it's maybe a good idea to remove the plate on the side whithout cable.

http://endless-sphere.com/forums/

Sorry I didn't provide the URL earlier; it's always the first thing on the list when I type "endless sphere forums" into google.

A torque arm is essentially a second set of dropouts that are secured higher up on the front forks.  They convert the high intensity torque at the axle (which tends to destroy the dropout) into a small force on the front forks.  A variety of methods are used.  I believe there is an old thread on this forum discussing them...here: http://goldenmotor.com/SMF/index.php?topic=45.msg534#msg534 although there wasn't a whole lot of information presented.

Hopefully the search feature on Endless Sphere forums will turn up a better discussion.
