13 Beep Code
« on: May 13, 2023, 04:11:48 PM »
Purchased a 1950s scooter that was converted from gas to a Golden Motor.  Ran great when first got it.   Then a  month or so later it throws a 12 beep code.  I replace the thumb throttle.  Started working again.   next spring want to ride goes fine for a while then out of blue starts throwing a 13 beep code.  Code has never happened while riding it.  The motor is not overheating. You walk out to it push the button on thumb throttle it beeps once and then either beeps 13 more times or you hit the throttle it turns the wheel for maybe a half a second and then beeps 13 times.

Hi andto the forum.

It sounds like you may have either a poor connection on the temperature sensor wire/connector or a faulty temperature sensor.

If you unplug the Hall sensor connector you should be able to measure the resistance between the Black and White wires on the motor's Hall/temperature sensor connector.

According to the temperature sensor data sheet, the resistance should be 500~700 Ohms if the motor is at room temperature.
Theoretically, the over temperature error should only occur if the resistance is higher than ~1,300 Ohms (when the stator temperature exceeds 150°C.)

If the measured resistance is higher than 1,000 Ohms (or possibly open circuit) then it is most likely a faulty sensor or a poor soldered connection inside the motor (or the White temperature sensor wire has broken).

If the sensor itself is faulty (resistance too high), and the motor is definitely not getting too hot, try setting the Motor overtemperature protection enable setting to 0:Disable to see if the 13 beep error disappears.
If the 13 beep error still persists, and you don't want to dismantle the motor to replace the faulty sensor, connecting a 470 Ohms resistor across the black and white sensor wires should hopefully stop it.  ;)

I separated the Hall sensor connection and tested the motor's Hall connector and it was 615 ohms which is right where it should be.  I also separated the throttle connection to look at a wire.  Now when I push the On/Off button on the throttle the scooter throws a 16 beep code.  Thoughts/suggests

From the results of your test, it looks like the motor side of the temperature sensor circuit is perfectly good.

This means the fault must be either the wiring between the Hall sensor connector and the controller, or a fault within the controller itself.

If you plug the Hall Sensor connector back in and then unplug the main 30 pin connector from the controller you will need to try and measure the resistance between the Black and White Temperature Sensor wires going into the Main connector:

If your meter probes are too big to fit into the rear of the connector where the wires enter, then you may have to use a couple of sewing needles or safety pins etc. and then touch the probes against the needles/pins to read the resistance.

I would not recommend pushing needles/pins into the female contact on the controller side of the connector, as it could damage the female connector if the diameter of the needle/pin is too large.

If it still reads ~615 Ohms at the 30 pin contacts, then the problem is most likely within the controller itself :(  (unless you can see obvious signs of external corrosion on the related pins or sockets)

However, if the reading is above 1,300 Ohms then the fault will be somewhere in the wiring between the controller and the Motor's Hall Sensor connector.

The 16 beeps sometimes occur when the controller is in programming mode. Did you leave the programming cable attached by any chance?

Did you try setting the Motor overtemperature protection enable setting to 0:Disable to see if the 13 beep error disappeared?
