Regen question - high power output even when disabled
« on: March 23, 2016, 04:33:12 AM »
When my regen is disabled and the level is removed from the bike, my MP4 still puts a ton of energy back into the battery when pedalling on a bike stand.  As per my other thread I am able to use this as a pedal generator.  The same effect would happen if I were to freewheel down a big hill, ie. my Mp4 would be putting energy back into my battery despite regen being disabled.  Is that normal?  When I pedal on the stand I can put out 14-15 amps at around 14v into my solar charge controller, so this has me wondering if every time I am freewheeling on a ride I'm charging my battery even though I don't want to be doing so.  But I guess all that energy being generated by freewheeling a big motor has to go somewhere.

Hi RooGM
this would be possible WHEN your Battery is below that voltage. What you experience is the "freewheeling voltage" done by the protection diodes in the FETs, else this energy would charge up until one component reach it's maximum voltage. I'm not into the MPx electronics but any FET (Push-Pull-Configuration) especially with the 3 half bridges you should get a very calmed current out of it. In my config I'm blocking (I've enabled Regen!) current back to the battery, but it's stored in a UltraCap-Cascade (11* 2*90F) which helps me to smooth down high Amps at start.
Cheers
