Chain driven 48V+ CRF50

Hi I'm from Quebec and id like to build my own electric bike.

I got a CRF50 I want to convert to electric, it must be chain driven, at least 48v (can be more) and go 80km/h minimum with enough tork to go uphill without loosing much speed. Like a 125cc 4 stroke engine.

What motor/controller you would suggest? and wich setup volt watt would be the best for this project?

I'm thinking about lithium battery, budget is around 2k$.

I'm a welder/machinist so my only concern for now is what I don't know about, the electric motor.

I need to go at least 20km offroad, then charge it at my job (for maximum 10hrs) and get back.

The bike weighs 50KG and I weighs 68KG.

What about the HPM-5000B and HPC 300 controller?
I can't find a throttle for this controller on 72v

Hi Stomper.

7 KW on a pocket bike aught to be a lot of fun!  The mount pattern on the motor should make for an easy installation.  Are you  thinking of using two 36V GM batteries in series?  Any idea where you are going to install the battery/ies?

I will use lithium pack 2x 36v 20ah should be enough.
I have to put them in the frame, so i'll start with the motor and see what space I got left for the 2 pack after that.

I also have the choice to use a hub motor I found a 72v 4000W hub motor for 10" wheels, so I'm waiting for more info about it and i'll choose wich one is best, but a hub motor would make more space for the battery.

Hi Stomper

The motor in hub is pretty tempting. but it would be the disc brake vs drum brake that would make me go for the hub motor.  But then, I'm old enough the remember how bad drum brakes really can be.:)

I have a 800A controller limited at 250A with a 20 cell lifepo4 60AH.
15kw peak top speed 92km/h.

Scooter is now limited to 60km/h. Range with that speed is 80km
My daughter ride it every day. Now 20000km in 3,5 year.

I took the one with disc brake, it include the disc, galiper and lever, with a 3000W controller 48-84v with twist throttle and LCD computer with speed and batt level.

So now I'm waiting for it to be shipped, i'll take more picture of the motor and the bike once I got it. The seller said it could take 1 to 2 weeks for shipping.

I'm still waiting for the lithium battery, I don't want to buy something cheap wrapped with duct tape, I'm looking for something like eriknoort a battery in a plastic case.

Any advice for the batt is welcome.

I received the motor today with the regen controller.



No it's not from golden motor I coudn't find any 10" wheels on GM website and no answer from GM china after mailing them about a 10" wheel.

So I'm starting the project very slowly I got all winter to do this, I don't have the lithium battery yet i'll buy them later, i'll test the motor with 4 old lead battery for now.

So the next phase is to make a drawing of the frame in solidworks, buy the aluminum and weld it. Yes i'm making a custom alum frame for it.

made the frame in solidworks, now I need to make a boltable sub-frame for the controller and battery.

I'm using the same dimension as the original CRF50 frame so the subframe will fit on any CRF.
