anyway...     new controller in.. worked good.... then not... checked hall connection.. worked ok,,, then back wheel seemed to hesitate.. not sure if on brake pads, or seizing up... then.... 5 beeps

I'm in a similar position.  I'm on my second controller, and something went wrong mid-ride.  I think I got fewer than 10 rides out of the last controller, which puts the cost per trip well above what it costs me to drive, which is just plain wrong, and that's discounting the time lost to having to fix the system and the time lost on my commute to diagnosing problems and ultimately limping the bike home.

Did you buy the second controller or was it a return under warannty?

Those fet should be easy swapped out, while youre at it put a decent low esr 100v cap and I would try to get a linear voltage reg somewhere in there as I'm starting to have suspicions about the new regulators.

Here be a thread. Someone modding these and making them draw pulling wheelies at 90 amps and blowing it up and fixing them agains.

I did buy the second one.  I certainly have one dead controller and haven't gotten to testing out this one.  I also haven't ordered the correct drivers to open up the controllers.  This is a major part of the issue - I'd really like something that just works, which I had with the initial controller for the first few months.

A common misconception about these motors is that
you just hop on and ride like a motorcycle.

The motors are limited in wattage by the specification,
there is no "oh, you're overdriving this" safety.

This really is a do it yourself kit.

You are perfectly welcome to ride the 500 Watt motor
and pull 1000W of power, but it will melt wires and fry
parts.

Good clues that you are over-driving your motor are
a grinding sound (not metallic, more like truck tires on
the highway) or heated up leads going to the motor
or battery.

I can do both with my bike.

I purchased a 20Amp 400VDC circuit breaker that will
trip if I start to draw too much power.

It may be something that GM should offer for sale.

i think I may try the idea of a 20A fuse

now to adjust rear gear so chain does not slip off cassette towards hub
