Magic pie 3 axle is stuck
« on: August 18, 2020, 01:02:41 AM »
Hi all,

I have a MP3, suddenly during a ride at low speed the axle got stuck. The axle cannot rotate anymore versus the MP3. What could have happened and how to fix it?

Hi Eric andto the forum.

If you have already removed the wheel and the the axle is absolutely seized solid and you cannot even move it with a 10mm/adjustable spanner, then it could be a collapsed bearing that has locked up, and this would obviously need to be replaced.

If the wheel is still on the bike and you are unable to turn the wheel, make sure that the axle has not slipped in the dropouts allowing the tyre to jam against the frame/fork or the brake pads to bind against the brake disc/wheel rim.

However, if you can gradually turn the axle very slowly in relation to the wheel (but the resistance increases significantly when you try to rotate it faster) then it is probably a failed controller that is effectively short circuiting two of the three Phase wires.

If you remove the controller and disconnect the Three thick Yellow, Green and Blue Phase wires from the controller (and make sure that the exposed connectors don't touch against each other), then the axle should no longer be electromagnetically locked. If this is the case, then a new controller will be needed.

Take a look at Gary's video showing how to remove the controller.
The clip holding the cable against the axle can be easily removed using a small screwdriver:

If you draw a diagram showing the position of the three Phase wires before you disconnect them from the controller, it should help to ensure that they are replaced in the correct order on the new controller.  ;)

Please let us know what the actual cause is/was.
