New kit - worked for 1 kilometer
« on: May 07, 2009, 08:08:51 PM »
I just finished my DIY kit today. Took the bike for a spin, but sadly it lasted for only 1 kilometer, and then the motor died.

I have all kinds of beeps. When I turn on the key, I get two beeps without touching anything.

Pressing the CC gives me a beep after two presses.

Touching the throttle gives me two beeps.

A presume I connected everything correct since it ran flawless for a kilometer. I have checked all connections once more.

I have a 250W Mini motor with a 36V 16Ah battery and thumb throttle. The newest controller and Lion-battery.

Anyone that can give me some clues (I have send mail to GM, but hope for a quicker reply here...)

Best Regards

Gunnar

Gunnar,
Sorry to hear that your kit failed so soon.

Perhaps you have a loose connection somewhere, check the thread "Bought kit -will not work" further down on the forum. It says something about issues with the alarm connection.

Here is a list of malfunctions and the beeps.

Hope this helps.

The message abve this one has the new manual with more help.

Looks like I got almost exactly the same problems as the OP in this thread:

The two beeps you get could be an indicator of Hall-Sensor failure. Double check the hall sensor connector, the one with 5 wires in it. Perhaps one of the leads are loose?

Since you have a mini motor with planetary gear it will not help to push the bike forwards to make the motor run without hall sensors, but you could try to pull it backwards a bit when applying throttle just to see if it will run.

No luck

I have measured the voltage on the Hall cables

Black - Blue (should be 0V if not moving the wheel, and 4.9V when moving). Gives 0V both ways (Corr: see post 9)
Black - Yellow (should be 0V if not moving the wheel, and 4.9V when moving). Gives 4.45V both ways (Corr: see post 9)
Black - Green (should be 0V if not moving the wheel, and 4.9V when moving). Gives 0V both ways (Corr: see post 9)

When pressing the CC 5 times to reset, the motor gives a half second movement, and the it stops.

Is it possible to service the hall sensor, or does it mean I need a new wheel and/or controller from China?

Edit: Should also mention that the noise from the motor was louder than expected during the test ride.

One more thing

I discovered the following:

Turning the key on - no beeps, but as soon as I move the wheel 1 inch (forward or backward), I get two beeps.

Could this have something to do with the alarm going off? Or is it that the controller during the movement of the wheel recognize error with the Hall-sensors?

It could be the alarm, make sure that the red wire from the "G" terminal on the controller has a connection to battery "+", without this connection the alarm is armed.

Helge: Just checked, and I have 41.8v from battery to the G-terminal. That should exclude this possibility.

 ::) UPDATE:

Found the problem, but how to fix?

I checked everything once more, and the problem is:

Checking the hall-sensors once more, I found that the green wire going to the hall sensor is dead. The blue and yellow rise the voltage to 4.95V when the wheel is moved, but the green is steady 0V. That should indicate a hall-sensor failure as suggested.

Can this be fixed, or do I need a new wheel?

Gunner contacted me and we discussed the error on the phone. He did some further investigation and measurement. We concluded that the green hall output was stuck low, either caused by short to GND or possibly by an open or defect hall output. Gunner felt that it was too risky for him to try to fix this, and quite costly to ship the motor all the way from Norway to China.

Fortunately I had a spare motor without rim that I have now sendt to Gunner. He will try to swap the housings so he keeps the rim, hopefully this will work. If not, we need long-distance service from China  :)

Thank you, Perbear! What a brilliant guy you are! The new motor arrived today, and it's working!

I have contacted Tom, and he promised to send me a new motor to replace the one I borrowed.

Thanks a million.
