Pedal generator connected to motors

I am building an entry for a "kinetic sculpture" race, which must be human powered.  I would like to have 2 people pedaling to generate electricity to drive (probable hub) motors.   The advantages are no chains and gears ( the machine must go in water and through mud and sand) and use of regen braking on downhills to recharge a battery (the battery would be discharged at start of race to compile with rules).  Firstly, is this possible?  Then, can GM hub motors be submerged in water?   The generator(s) could be GM motors run in reverse, as discussed in other topics in this forum or could be other alternator/generators:  how easy is it to link 2 sources to charge a single battery and drive motors?

it sounds like alcohol was involved in some decision making:)  Would you show us your progress, please?

regarding linking two generators, if they are DC output of the same voltage, a pair of isolating diodes are all you need. 

regarding getting motors and generators wet, if you take them apart and rinse/clean/dry after every submersion, you could likely get away with it for a while; using low voltage M/G stuff may keep you from electrirfying everything.  It would be a good idea to seal all the electronic connections, and keep the electronics as dry as possible.  Corrosion will be the worst problem cause.
