MP3 - throttle got stuck on and now it wont go
« on: January 17, 2014, 09:34:25 PM »
so im running a Magic Pie 3..
less than 100kms on it..
48v throttle but only running 36v.. (does that even matter)
hasnt been in the rain.. (i read another topic that said that was the cause of the throttle getting stuck on)
i have throttle and the cruise control/horn switch plugged in..

i bought the kit maybe 15 months ago and because of parts trouble with the bike ive only managed to piece it together recently

so I was riding into town when the lights in front of me turn red, so I hit the brakes but there was power still going to the wheels, I flicked the throttle a few times just to see if it was stuck which did nothing, so I slammed on the brake to stop myself from flying through the red lights.. I don't think I hit the cruise control button.. and I don't know how it works either could someone explain..

i don't have a kill switch on the handlebars and was too worried about the lights to turn around and unplug the battery..
so the motor was completely stalled for a second or two and then went dead..
unplugged the battery and plugged it back in.. no go..

battery is all good still works..
throttle lights up empty like normal (running 36v instead of 48v)..
i can connect to the controller and modify the settings..

can someone help me figure out what is wrong with my Magic Pie.. at least where to start, I have no idea where to start, I don't want to start tearing up the neat connectors to test the throttle etc if I don't have to..

cheers adrian

Hi Adrian andto the forum.

If the throttle had failed fully open (or the cruise control had been activated by mistake) the brake switches should still have stopped the motor.
As the brake switches obviously did not cut the power, it sounds as if you may have a faulty ground connection somewhere between the main front harness multi-connector and the speed controller inside the hubmotor.

A faulty ground wire or connection would cause a full throttle signal at the controller. If the battery is connected in this state (with a full throttle signal being supplied to the controller) a safety feature of the controller would prevent the motor from running again until a low throttle signal is first supplied, which is hopefully the reason why your motor no longer runs.

I suggest that you check that the 8 pin connector between the front harness and the motor harness does not have any damaged pins and that both halves of the connector are pushed fully together to hopefully avoid any poor connections.

If that doesn't make any difference, you can perform a simple test that bypasses the main front harness, brake switches, throttle and cruise controls and simply checks the motor, controller and battery circuit by disconnecting the main control harness and then bridging two throttle contacts with a piece of small diameter wire, I used a reshaped paper clip as indicated here:

Don't force the wire into the sockets as this can open the contacts up, resulting in a poor contact with the pins when the the main harness plug is refitted, you only need to touch it against the two contacts to hopefully make the throttle run at full speed, confirming that the motor, controller and battery are all OK.

Please note:
Because of the aforementioned safety feature, the power must be turned on before the wire is inserted into the correct sockets or the motor will not run!

To avoid accidentally shorting out the wrong sockets, and causing possible damage, you can place a piece of masking tape (or similar) over the other sockets to ensure the wire does not accidentally enter the wrong socket.

As it states on the diagram, make sure the bike is secure with the wheel raised off the ground before you insert the wire and keep hands and loose wires etc. safely away from the wheel and tyre!

If it doesn't run during the above test, the controller or motor harness could be faulty and may need replacing. :(

Please let us know what you find.

Alan

thank you for the warm welcome Alan
i forgot to mention my bike has hydraulic disc brakes which I decided to keep on the bike.

but that doesnt matter.. I did the throttle test and it works yay.. well the motor/controller/battery works so the throttle must be buggered..
which is the best news and I didnt have to disassemble the whole bike to figure it out which is great..

i have a few spare thumb throttles laying around somewhere, I don't need the battery lights but I would like to wire the light switch permanently on.

to wire the light switch permanently on id just solder the orange and brown wire together
and the throttle would be white to green (signal), black to black (-) and red to white (+5v)

cheers adrian

edit: got throttle wrong.. fixed
