Best GM Battery Charging Procedure
« on: February 05, 2011, 02:27:29 PM »
Hi everyone,

am I doing the right thing by recharging my GM 48v/12ah battery after every time I use it?  My daily commute is only 5 miles each way and I charge the pack in work and then when I get home ready for the following day.

i'm only asking as i'm worried that every recharge might count as a cycle? I hope not!  I presume a 'cycle' counts for a full discharge and not partial?

Andrew :)

yes indeed all the little charges are much better than running it down, as there is more chance of an unbalanced pack...2 half charges will count as 1 charge cycle

In fact with lithium its much better to charge little and often then 1 big shot

Also on the weekend / holidays, it would be better to charge the battery on the sunday night before use then immediately on a friday, then leaving it stored on full charge all weekend

Lithium cells are quite stressed by being stored fully charged, and will affect the longevity of the cells, not massively, but we all want to look after our little buddies right :),

Storage temperature is also a critical factor...the worst thing you can do to lithium cells ( short of chucking them in the batch with you ) is to store them fully charged in a really warm envoironment, which is why if you use a laptop at home, you should remove the battery in day to day use on the charger, or you can reduce the battery's life substantially, due to it being kept fully charged by the charger, and nicely heated by the laptop itself

mid you though, 5 miles commute, you could get away with charging it at work, going home and back to work...plenty of range for 10 miles ( depending on speed).....the side effect being of course that you wouldnt be using your electricity  ::) :o ;D

Firstly monkey!  As you can see from my signature i'm a "Recovering Ciderholic" so I do have a tendancy to slurrrrr and repeat myself  have a tendancy to slurr and repeat myself :P

I just wanted to make sure I was in the picture and not doing anything that would reduce the life of my investment!

Anyway, back to the serious replies ;),,,  Ginge,  thanks for the 'more informative'  :D back up,  and believe me, I take real pleasure in using as much Local Council Electricity as possible ;D

It's my ambition to build my own battery,  one day, maybe....??

Andrew :)

P.S,  Monkey,  I love posting new threads, it keeps you on your toes :)

Erm.... dontcha mean "BATH"  ??

I have no idea what's going on anymore... Andrew in order to get the best charge from your battery touch your tongue on the power terminal after each ride. If it burns and hurts like bu!*ary then your battery is still good.
