Throttle's battery level indicator faulty?
« on: August 11, 2010, 10:12:53 PM »
Hi everyone. So I've noticed that my battery indicator isn't working quite as I had hoped it would. Before the first time that I had to charge the battery, it showed green, then went to yellow, and then within a minute it went straight to red. Should it not stay at yellow for a while? After the second time I charged the battery, the light stayed on green, then went to yellow after a few trips, then back to green for another few trips, and then all of a sudden the battery just died on me. Could there be a problem in the way I hooked up the indicator? There was a yellow harness coming from one of the cables from the throttle and I hooked that up to the yellow harness on the controller end, which seems to be the cable for the battery level indicator since when I unplug it, the indicator doesn't light up. Any suggestions?

Mike, unfortunately GM's battery indicator does tend to work like that with lithium batteries. Because they were originally intended for use with lead acid batteries, they are not very accurate when used with the lithium packs. The voltage of the lithium batteries tends to drop much less noticeably while being discharged than with lead acid batteries. But when they are almost completely exhausted, the voltage drops quite quickly:

Although the meter is not perfect, it can be modified fairly easily to make the lights go out sooner. This is done by fitting a variable resistor into the green wire.

Check out this post for more details.

Ah thank you so much, I'll have to do this when I can find some time.
