MagPie Kit 48V10AH Battery

Anybody have similar problems order a Magic Pie Kit + Blue-Tooth Adaptor and 48V10AH Battery in August advised tracking number and received Kit in 4 days advised battery would be sent separately all good so far,
Battery arrived last week no notification or tracking number and just left at door step.
Installed battery on bike and got a spark when install the Anderson plug the throttle lit up though this is odd so inserted key no luck power stays on,
I remove the end cover on battery and as you can see the switch has not been wired to the circuit, the battery cables are wired straight to the plug on the battery cover.

Hi Barrie andto the forum.

You didn't say where you purchased this battery from, but you will need to contact your supplier to agree on a practical solution.

I suspect that returning the battery is likely to be very expensive, therefore the most obvious solution would be to modify the existing wiring to incorporate the switch as I've shown below:



Although this particular switch is typically installed into the positive cable, the battery case is fully isolated and the battery's BMS also switches the negative side of the battery circuit to prevent over current and over discharging, therefore the key switch will work just as effectively installed on the negative cable (as shown in the modified photo) which seemed to be the neatest and most convenient option in this instance.

You would simply cut the existing black wire approximately 2 inches from the Anderson connector leaving enough cable to allow it to be soldered onto the nearest switch contact.
You would then have to extend the remaining black wire coming from the battery using a few inches of suitable gauge wire soldered between the original wire and the other switch terminal.
The soldered wire joint would need to be safely insulated using either heat shrink tubing or insulation tape.

Unfortunately, I suspect a heavy duty soldering iron will be required to produce enough heat to solder the thick wires onto the switch contacts, so you may need to find someone locally who is able to do this for you and then (hopefully) reclaim any expenses incurred from your battery supplier.

Thanks Alan for the welcome to the Forum, i’m from Sydney Australia I purchased the kit and battery directly from Golden Moto?r China.
Golden Motor have not replied to many emails I have sent about this problem they are all very nice I even had the sales manager Nick Shen ring me to see if I had received his email, but when you pay your money you’re ignored.
And thanks for your photo rework that may help others.it is not a oversight or missed,
the wiring to key and Anderson plug from battery has to be completed before cover is installed  so one can only suggest it was deliberate.

Hi Barrie, I've just been looking at another thread and it appears that your particular switch is the type that was more susceptible to to failure.  :(

Perhaps the switch has been deliberately bypassed to ensure it won't fail at a later date?  ???

I'll try and get hold of GM China and ask them to contact you directly with an explanation and a solution.

Hi Alan had a look at the thread NEW AND IMPROVED BATTERY SWITCH that was 2012 8 years ago,
Are they still installing these switches randomly to unsuspecting customers or more concerning this battery is eight years old.

Hi Barry,

I don't know whether those particular switches have been improved and are now being used again, or whether they are simply using the less reliable switches for custom modified batteries that only require the locking part of the keyswitch and don't need the switching contacts at all.

I can see that this would very useful for someone with an early external controller where the battery power had to remain on for the anti theft function to work, as this modification would allow the battery to be left securely on the bike without having to leave the keys in the battery to turn on the power for the anti theft function.

Perhaps your battery was specially ordered by someone else who requested to have the switch to be bypassed and has inadvertently been sent to you by mistake.

Anyway, I have contacted GM China and they are looking into this problem with your battery, and hopefully Nick Shen will be contacting you shortly.

Welcome Barrie , My first two ebikes I built the battery had no switch ... I used the small size battery cutoff switch ...worked great ..

Hi diverdon that’s great but my problem is I bought a battery advertised complete with key to switch on and of and lock what I received is not what I paid for.
I also order the Blue-Tooth Adaptor with MagicPie5 kit and have not receiveed that yet been a long wait,
I have been riding electric bikes since 2000 and till 2014 I built my own.
Then I purchased a MagPie4 kit and 48V10AH battery and I have clock up over 45000 km the last 6 years.

Your question about battery charging my daily ride is 30k which leaves about 25% to 30% of charge left and I charge every day,
6 years and over 45000 km

Hi Barrie ... sorry I didn't understand the issue was not getting what you paid for ... Thanks for the tip on battery usage ...What battery did you use charging every day ?/ How long did it last ? Were you charging to 100 % every time ?? 
 
     This is my first bike 4  11AH  SLA Batteries ...I was much younger then ..
