PAS Settings
« on: August 20, 2016, 03:38:42 PM »
Is anyone using the PAs as a Elec. Assist?  I am trying to determine what the best settings on the controller is to get the smoothest ride (without surging).  Rides very smooth in #3 at 15 MPH, but yet to find a setting for #2 and a smooth ride at 10 MPH.  I really like to ride at 10-12 MPH for our trail/road conditions and I am a rec. rider, not using to commute.  I think I am the exception as most of you seem to want speed while I am after smooth rids and range!! any help will be appreciated.  I have been adjusting the Acceleration # and PAS Ratio? Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom,

Using different gears will also affect the amount of pedelec assistance. As the power assistance is basically controlled by the pedal speed, you can simply select higher gears for less assistance and lower gears for increased assistance without having to touch the assistance mode button.

If you don't have any steep hills to worry about, then you should also be able to lower the Main Battery Current (A) and Rated Phase Value (A) settings to reduce the motor's maximum power which should also reduce the maximum available assistance (and also extend your range);)

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use the same controller settings to suit the preferences of all riders using different bikes over various terrain etc., so you will have to simply experiment until you find the settings (and gears) that work best for your riding style with your particular bike.

Is the Main Battery Current the same as Battery Drawn Current?  If so mine is set at 25.  How much would you suggest I start dropping the Rated Phase Value?  I have not changed this value from the factory setting!  Would a setting of 50 be a good start.  I have adjust the PAS Ratio and the Acceleration down.  Should I restore them to the factory settings before
I start changing the Rated Phase Value.  I just don't want to get this so screwed up that it will not run!!!! tom

Main Battery Current and Battery Drawn Current are exactly the same, it's just that different versions of the programming software refer to the battery current by different names.  ???

I would not reset the PAS Ratio and Acceleration settings, but experiment with changing the Battery and Phase current to see how it affects the level of assistance. You might want to try lowering the PAS ratio even further if the bike is still trying to go faster than your preferred speed, and simply use a lower gear occasionally if necessary.

I suggest you keep a note of the settings (save a screenshot or use a hand written table etc.) and write comments about each group of settings tried. Over time you should be able to fine tune the settings to your liking.

You will not damage the motor or controller by entering incorrect settings, and they can easily be changed back to their previous setting if you find the motor is not responding as it should. Accidentally selecting the wrong voltage is probably the only setting that would prevent the motor from running completely, but even this will not damage the controller or the motor, and can easily be corrected to restore the motor function.  ;)

I would reduce the battery current and the phase current by a similar percentage rather than similar Amperage, as the phase current is usually around 2.5 times higher than the battery current.  ;)
