New member with questions about Magic Pies and Smart Pies
« on: January 10, 2015, 11:14:20 PM »
Hi I'm new to the ebike. I have many years of mountain biking experience as a hobby. But finding it harder to get out these days. I'm looking
at converting a bike to an ebike with possibly a Magic Pie 3 kit.. but I do have some questions about the main differences between the smart
pie and Magic Pie kit? I see the Magic Pie kit have higher wattage rating but does this mean more power then the compared Smart Pie kit?
thanks for your time. MG

Hi andto the forum.

The Smart Pie is much smaller and lighter than the Magic Pie and is ideal to provide additional assistance on level roads and slight inclines, but it is not really powerful enough to climb steeper hills without a reasonable amount of pedal power being supplied by the rider.

The Magic Pie is much larger and heavier, therefore it can deliver a lot more power and produce considerably more torque than the smaller Smart Pie, and I would definitely recommend fitting a rear MPIII or MP4 for mountain bike use.

The MP4  is equipped with the latest vector controlled "Sine Wave" controller which makes it a lot quieter and more responsive than the MPIII and it also produces more torque.
The MPIII produces a "pinging" noise which increases with load whereas the MP4 produces no discernible load related noise when power is applied, even at full throttle!

The regenerative braking force is also much stronger on the Magic Pies than it is on the Smart Pies.

If you have an aluminium frame, you will need to fit some suitable torque arms to provide a secure fixing for the axle which is able to withstand the torque reaction under load.

Great thanks for the info. I'm was looking at the Magic Pie 3, but after doing some reading the sine wave controller seems like a nice
unit. I'm not looking to build a rocket ship just a good commuter bike. As for batteries is it worth building your own system or just
look at one that has been put together? I'm thinking of a 48V system my commute is about 19 km each way. Would a 10Ah be large
enough? I live in a prairie province hills aren't much of an issue. MG
