« on: March 30, 2013, 02:07:42 PM »
Hi All,

What's speed (RPM) mg reached on the MagicPie3 16" motor/wheel with 24V battery?

Thank you!

Assuming the 16" MPIII has higher speed stator windings like the 16" MPII, I would expect the maximum unloaded wheel speed to be around 316 rpm @ 24V (which works out to ~15.5mph or 25km/h) but the maximum speed on a level road will be slower.

What's about 12" 24V Smart Pie? Will it also reach 25km/h?

What's difference between the Magic Pie and Smart Pie motors?

Will the motors double their speed when hey work on 48V battery (comparing to 24V one)?

Looking at the performance figures for the 12" Smart Pie it will not even reach 11km/h on 24V without any load.

What's difference between the Magic Pie and Smart Pie motors?
The difference in size and weight is quite significant:

The Smart Pie wheel weighed  in at 6.42 kg (14.15 lbs) in its delivered state (no freewheel, tyre or inner tube), which is 28% less than my MPIII which weighs 8.92kg (19.71lbs), and 15.75% less than my original Magic Pie which weighed 7.62kg (16.8lbs) both of the Magic Pies are 26" rear wheels too.

But I found the top speed to be similar to my MPII.

Check out my Smart Pie review for further details.

Will the motors double their speed when hey work on 48V battery (comparing to 24V one)?

The unloaded speed of the motor should double with twice the voltage, but the maximum speed on the road will be less than double due to the large increase in the aerodynamic drag at higher speed.

Would you recommend on the Magic or Smart Pie for 48V 26" bicycle?

It's impossible for me to recommend one over the other as they both have their own distinct advantages/disadvantages which will be rated differently by each individual rider, based upon their riding style and specific requirements.

If you enjoy pedalling, but would like (or perhaps need) assistance on hills and into headwinds, then I would recommend the Smart Pie because it is smaller, lighter, less obvious and produces very little drag when the bike is being pedalled without motor assistance.

If you regularly have to climb steep hills, or are no longer able (or just too lazy) to do a bit of pedalling to assist the motor, then I would recommend the Magic Pie, because the larger (and more powerful) motor produces far more torque.

For most of my riding I tend to use my Smart Pie in preference to my Magic Pie, but I really notice the difference in power when riding up steep grassy fields. But when I want to have a go at pulling wheelies, the Magic Pie's superior torque makes it a lot easier (which is also a lot more fun). ;)

I hope this answers your question.
