Shrinker maximum load
« on: March 01, 2013, 06:48:35 PM »
Hey there,

I live in Finland and just bought a Shrinker bike from a bike shop specializing in electric bikes. There were no instructions included, however I finally figured out how to work the unfolding and folding mechanism (especially locking the saddle in place) after about an hour of playing around with it, yay!

My question is about the maximum load the bike can handle. On the shop's website it says max load is 120 kg. However I am 142 kg and bought it fully understanding that I'm still too heavy for it. This may sound strange but I wanted to buy myself the thing I've been dreaming of for a very long time (a bike which is both folding and electric) to give me inspiration to get my weight down to atleast 120kg. So what I wanted to ask was the reason for the max load. Is it max 120kg due to the construction of the bike not being able to take that weight, or is it due to the electric engine and mechanisms related to that? (not being able to handle going uphill electronically with such a heavy load). Any advice would be much appreciated!

I have two of these that I kept for my own personal use. I have had many different sized riders on them and they don't seem to die, so I would not worry about the motor. I have found though that the locking bar that runs parallel to the seat post holds the riders weight and does become bent. I removed the bar from both bikes, found an exact size solid metal bar and inserted it inside. After re-installing the bars they are both very strong and work fine. 2 years use now and still going strong.

Hey Gary and thanks for your reply! I'm actually surprised and delighted to hear that your Shrinkers have lasted so well. Very very valuable information on that back bar. It was actually that with which I was struggling so long until I found the perfect height adjustment to allow the bar to go into place. Before I realized to adjust the vertical length, I kept on trying to mimic the "simple ast that" movement in the video, hoping it would lock into place haha. Well seeing as the bar got bent with people who were probably much more normally weighted than myself, I'm pretty sure I'll have to do the same trick as yourself!

Since the bike included no instructions (except for precautions for the battery and charger), is there anything else that would be good for me to know?
