Shimano SLX / Alternative PAS configuration

Hello,

I'm trying to fit the PAS hall sensor into my shimano SLX crank set. The one I got with the new Smart Pie doesn't fit at all  :(

However, I might be able to use that anyway. I just used a dremel to make a bigger hole, take out the front cassette, fit the magnets to cassette and plug it back.

The problem is the sensor part in the end of the wire; I want to install it somewhere else than around the crank axle (surprisingly, it doesn't fit).
Is this possible? Does the metal circular part need to be centered within the magnets, or is it as I think just a regular hall sensor connected to the place where the screw is? So is the place next to the small screw that creates the hall effect?
Does it matter how close to the revolving magnets the sensor is?

If the circular metallic part is part of the sensing function, then I probably need to get a bigger one somewhere.

Hi dBlues andto the forum.

The pedelec sensor is the molded part attached to the metal bracket:



The orientation of the sensor in relation to the magnets will affect its operation, as well as both the direction of rotation and the polarity of the magnets, it might be a good idea to mark a line across the end of the sensor in line with the centre of the mounting hole and then make sure it still points towards the centre of the crank when you install it on the bike.

These sensors can be awkward to set up correctly and I found with mine that the magnets needed to be as close as possible (without actually touching) for it to work more reliably.

I subsequently removed my sensor because the power from my non programmable Original Magic Pie was a bit too strong for pedelec only operation and I had no way of controlling it.
At least you will be able to alter the program settings of your Smart Pie to adjust the Pedelec function if required.

Please let us know how well it works when you have installed and tested it.

I'll get back when I've installed it. So far I have almost everything else installed.

Some comments / questions:
a) Even my 9-gear shimano deore shifter worked without _any_ tuning on 7-gear cassette. It's a completely plug'n play system now, when I want to go mountain biking I just switch rear tyre and take off the battery. Limiter tuning is not necessary, the motor will limit mechanically. Turned out it's just the proper size.

b) I just can't say how much fun it was to ride on 48V system.

c) Hopefully I can ride on -20C too... shouldn't be a problem I think.

d) It gets a bit dark now - the flashlight output gives 55V when battery full. In any case I can't just plug a led there. Seems a large series resistor would be a bad idea :). In reality I have a P7 led system, with 3.4V 3A.

Hi dBlues,

For a LED driver, I went to an electronics shop and found a  110VAC switching power supply that put out 4 Volts at 5 amps for $5-6. Then I wired it into the 58VDC power on my Morgen and it works like a charm.   Since then I have found that Good Will and Salvation Army stores have bunches of such power supplies for low prices. 

The over voltage may reduce your LED life, but a low value hi wattage resistor in series will take that worry away.  I just let mine run really, really bright:)
