Running MP2 in reverse mode
« on: July 01, 2012, 02:23:54 PM »
Hi , I am building a Nirve Bike like Garys in the MP3 blog . My bike came with a disk brake but it is on the right side facing forward , opposite of the natural rotation of the MP2 . I have looked thru the Blogs but I have not found a solution . The wheel needs to run in reverse . A) can I reverse the direction of the wheel ? or B) swap the covers on the motor to get the disk on the other side of the wheel and run it in the regular direction ? I have heard that often alignment problems can occur with miss aligned covers . Thanks for your help . Rod

When my MP3 was running, it ran in reverse quite well.   If the disc is bolted to the hub, it should be ok, but if you have a threaded adapter, the torque will spin it off the hub when you brake.

Dennis , I failed to mention that my MP2 is front wheel . Since no one has come up with a solution , I will probably just remove the front brake , and use the horn button to turn on the regen / braking since I've done this before to  help with braking on my beach cruiser  . Rod

Hi Rod,

Are you using a GM controller? It has reverse and it runs full speed in reverse. I would try turning the motor around and running it in reverse.

Gary , yes I am running an internal controller on a front wheel MP2 . I tried to switch from forward to reverse by programing with the software , it did not reverse the wheel . I am using the old program PI200 I think . Do I need to use the new program ? I have already swapped the wheel around but the bike is scary if you use the Cruse control I have to remember to turn it off or braking is touchy . The horn button works as a brake with the regen , but I really would like to have the front brake . Do I need to rewire anything? Thanks Rod

Hi Rod,

You have to physically select reverse as well as enabling the software. Hopefully your wiring harness will have a spare connector where the reverse switch plugs in. Some of the MPIIs had a socket connector on the brown and yellow throttle cable wires which would plug straight in so that the red switch on the throttle could be used to select reverse.

If you don't want to have a switchable reverse function, you can simply short the reverse wires together with a piece of wire plugged into the two contacts on the reverse plug connector on the main harness.

If you don't have the LED lights connected, you should also have a spare red or brown connector which has a red lead linked to the yellow battery gauge connector. Don't short this connector out by mistake, as it will get very hot and cause damage within the main harness!

If you MPII does not support the reverse function you can try swapping the Green and Yellow phase wires and the Green and Yellow hall sensor wires inside the wheel on the controller. Take a look at this post for more details.

Alan , thanks  . I guess that my Pie does not support the reverse function . I found the connector to the front wheel controller . I tried using the red switch on the throttle and plugging into the connector after enabling the reverse function using the old program . That did not work . I tried to use the new software but it such a pain to use , I could not get any settings to save . I also don't get the question in chinese before opening the software . I tried deleting the data file on the new software that did not work . I set the data file to read only that did not work . The only way is to move the phase wires and halls I guess . I am happy with the way the bike runs now even though I only have a rear coaster brake . I rode a Mustang Motorcycle to school in the early 60's . It would do like 60mph and only had a rear brake . So I will be OK . I would be interested in Gary's thoughts since his is rear  brake only . P.S. I hate Windoze pcs . The only reason I can do any programing is my cousin gave me an old Gateway that runs XP . Everything that I own is Apple based . 2 Macs ,2 IPads , 4 IPods  and an IPhone .
The Chinese are so far behind in computer programing  . They make Apple products in China , why can't they make software to be compatable ? At least they could correct the file problem that the PD 280 software has .
Thanks again Alan , I might swap everything around in the wheel but not for awhile , I have been working on this bike for 5 days and I have other things to do , at least I can ride my PIE . Rod

HI Rod,

Sorry I forgot your pie 2 was internal:(

When I first bough the Cannibal I was upset because you cant get the disk brake in Canada. NO front brake didn'n't sound like a good idea. I even tried ordering from the states, but still they would not ship to me. I was actually thinking of asking you to accept front forks for me then ship them up here.

After about two weeks and different configurations I have decided the front disk brake is not nessasary and even probably dangerous. The front wheel so far out front just spins out every time you take off, so braking would slide easily. I swapped to a 36 volt battery for street legal speeds by default and added a brake lever to the left handlebar. The brake lever has no cable to a disk brake. I am just using it for regen braking on the front wheel now and it works great. This bike is really for someone that does not intend to ride on bad surfaces. A nice ride for a sunny day :)

I treid a few battery locations as well. I like the 36 feet of velcro strap method and haning it in the frame. The bike loses alot when you have a rack on the back. Still awesome thougfh in any configuration of course.

The lever, no brake cable, regen braking only

One battery

Three batteries

And now the preffered method, 36 feet of velcro strap

Of course with the velcro it's not a good idea to leave the bike unattended. So this ride is really for sunny day rides where you keep your butt in the seat or at least an eye on the battery ;)

Hi, Gary . I have also been eyeing all that space under the crossbar . I am short and have trouble reaching the peddles . I turned the seat mount around and got another inch forward out of it but I would like to lower it more but the battery is in the way . I had the battery moved back to lower the seat but I did not like the look . I like the way the bike feels at speed , much more like a motorcycle than the beach bike that I had before ,that felt a little over speed for the design . I might do the brakeless handle bar thing , I do have the regen connected to the horn switch to aid with braking . I find the coaster brakes work well . I will send pictures soon . Rod

Gary , actually its 91 degrees f at 2:55p here in Miami . Normal for this time of year . I don't want to rub it in , but I am retired ,its 91 f / 32c and I am getting in my pool which is 85 f to cool down after lunch at my local pub . Have a good weekend . Rod
