Newbie says hello
« on: February 14, 2012, 08:53:16 PM »
Hi,

I am building a 3/4 scale Magic Pie 3  powered version of the Morgan three-wheeler, and just wanted to introduce myself.  I'm a retired submariner, a retired engineer, and am now an artist in oil paint.

Hi Dennis andto the forum.

Your project sounds very interesting, will the MPIII be the only form of propulsion or is it going to have pedal power too? And what materials are you using for the chassis and bodywork?

It would be nice if you could post some pictures of your build as it develops, so we can see exactly what's involved, and how quickly it takes shape. ;)

Hi Alan,

I live in Oregon, and if an electric vehicle is no more than 1KW it can be legally driven on the street without any licensing, so I decided to not go to the trouble of making it a pedelec hybrid.  The chassis is a stressed .029" sheet steel semi-monocoque.  The front wheels are 24" x 3" wide, and the Magic Pie is a 20" cast wheel that I stretched out to take a 4" wide rear tire.   I'm hoping to keep the weight under 100 lbs without MP3 or battery.

When I figure out how to append photos I'll send some along.  I have a long way to go, but I hope to have it done by the end of spring.

Too add picture is simple. Directly under the text box you type your replies into the is an option "Attachments and other options"

Click that and the window expands a bit. now futher down you can see where you can browse your harddrive for a picture. then click post

The problem with this method is the picture has to be under 1000kb

You may want to open a free account over at photobucket. Then you can just link to your photos.

I totally agree with Les on this one, it certainly does look good. I'm sure a lot of hard work has gone into getting it to that state. Now what it really needs is a lightweight dummy V twin to go on the front:

And then put your art skills to good use by producing some suitable paintwork to finish it off nicely. ;)

My only concern is the total amount of weight that the single Pie will be hauling around, but hopefully the 20" wheel will provide the required thrust.  I just hope you don't have too many steep hills near to where you live.

Alan

P.S.
There's another picture of a Morgan on the GM Website, but that one appears to be an eight wheeler:

2x driven wheels, 2x castors on the front and 4x anti-wheelie wheels on the rear!  :D

Hi Alan,

I am trying to echo the design, rather than copy it.  So the spring/shocks for the front suspension are arranged to hint at the VeeTwin, and the support elements for transferring the loads from the A arms into the spring/shocks look like exhaust pipes.  This is much more an artist project than an engineer project.

Regarding the paint job, I am going to treat it as one of my paintings.  I have a love for machinery, and most of my paintings are of cars and boats and planes and motorcycles and you get the idea.   You can take a look at my web site, www.Horsepowerportraits.com to see my work.  Anyway, I'm planning on a  matt finish dark green on the bottom of most of the trike, gradually being overcome by flames to become a very bright yellow-orange on the top surfaces.   The front suspension area will be mostly gloss black.  I embossed flame shapes into the steel panels that make up the nose to help catch the light and heighten the flames eye appeal.

Dennis

Hi and welcome. it's nice to see some artworks being promoted on here (that's not including the engineering ones which are espeically creative).  Edward Hopper and Gerhard Richter came to mind when looking at the paintings on your website :).   It must be nice to have the time to paint and tinker with mechanics and electrics at the same time.   If I had the time and enough passion I would love to build a racing track based kit car here in the UK i.e a Caterham or Westfield two seater.

I hope you have fun with the project

Andrew :)

Hi Andrew,

I think if you have the passion, you will find the time. Thanks for taking a look at my site.  I hope you enjoyed the paintings.

I  am a long time gear head, and was a long time owner of Minis and Lotus Elans, and helped rebuild a Seven. I was struck by how simple it was built.   If I was just a little bit more insane I would have built a 7 clone with a small torquey diesel with a big turbo.  I have tried to keep Chapman's desire for lightness close to my heart.

I lived in Scotland off and on during the 60's and 70's.  Where are you in the UK?

TTFN,
Dennis
