No longer possible to save settings on MagicPie?
« on: August 26, 2011, 11:05:57 AM »
Hi, I have some problems with my MP motors. I use the goldenmotor software. PI200setup.exe and I can no longer use the store/save function. I have no problems connecting to the wheel but when I change the settings and try to store/save settings, it does not work. When I try the getConfig command the old settings are still there!!

I have tried the software on both XP and win7 but I have the same problem. Could this problem be related to the USB cable or is something else wrong?

Hi Myrek

I am not sure if any of your system settings have changed somewhere, but if you are able to receive an acknowledgement from the eeprom (connect) and the GetConfig would be reading it... so I can see how this confuses you !

From some testing experience - I would look toward the green wire coming out from the usb plug, this is wired to the cruise input on the controller that functions as a clock/enable signal.

If you can perhaps try it on another PC running win2003/XP would be a good start, then maybe look at the wires coming out from the USB...

I really hope somebody has not written to your eeprom sneakily 1 million+ times!  ;)

IC's are tricky though, there is the super slim chance the last time you programmed it there was some kind of error, spike, who knows that could have ruined its ability to write but it would be very unlikely.

I've had many of avr & pic chips fail to an extent that only some of the input/outputs work, but can still read and write to the chip. Then some very few that I could read, but no longer write...

Thanks for the reply. I have found some other strange things related to this problem... When I have connected to the wheel and use the getConfig, I get the parameters that are stored (And I cannot change) but I tried using the "factory settings" button and it worked!

Problem is now my wheel is set to the  factory standard settings and there is no way of changing them.. At least I know it's possible to change the settings, but not with the save/store command...

Has anyone opened the USB connector the check what chip is inside? Maybe it would be wise to try and update the device driver for it?
I have tried flashing the eeprom on several different computers and OS without luck.

Is anyone sure what type of communication is used between the wheel and pc? Just a simple serial over RS232 or is it SPI, I2C or something else?

I don't think the problem is related to broken wires etc, since I have been able to program the wheels before. I have several MP and they all have the same problem. I have tried 2 different USB adapters but the problem remains.

Any ideas?

Its I2C that's why I was pretty puzzled,
Have you tried it on another PC ??

Thanks for the info regarding I2C. I will hook up the wheel to a logic analyzer and see if I can get some answers...

I have tried 4 sets of wheels on two different computers.
