Title: BAC 281 Controller and R/C motors
Post by: sri on January 22, 2009, 08:19:36 AM
Does anyone have experiencing using the new controllers with R/C outrunner motors? I am looking to add an outrunner to  a BOB trailer.

Any other Goldenmotor controller with the R/C motors? I am looking for something with Regen. Using a 36V 20AH system.

Thanks for any info,
Sri

In my humble opinion, the regen function is overrated.

You only get a fraction of the power back, optimistically
something like 20%, but probably more like 10% of the
work goes back into the battery.  Most is lost as mechanical
waste (heat).

Someone from GM has stated that the new controllers do not
currently support regenerative braking.

I am fine with that.  From what I have seen so far, the
increased complexity of the regen controllers seems
to be more trouble than it's worth.

It's hard to think "Don't push the button while moving."

Thanks for the response e-lmer.

I believe you're right as far as the advantage of regen in terms of efficiency.

I am looking at it as a brake-assist. Especially with the trailer which can be loaded up to 70 lbs, that would be useful. I've noticed on my Bionx setup, that the regen is such an effective brake, I hardly use the manual brakes.

With the outrunner motors, the only controllers which people have used are the R/C controllers (like Castle Creations), all of which don't have regen. So, if you have experience with any regen-capable controller, I'd like to hear about it.
