Title: Reversing a BLDC motor
Post by: Jory on January 28, 2012, 02:08:51 AM
reversing a BLDC motor.   i've installed a 65 Watt BLDC motor in my quadricycle but I notice it spins backwards for the way i've set it up.   can I just reverse two of the three motor leads and spin it the other way?    if I short the two 'reverse' leads, the horn beeps....

Hi Jory and(https://i.imgur.com/evDSMvT.png)to the forum.

I'm guessing you've installed a 650 Watt motor, not a 65 Watt one. ;)

Anyway, I think you'll need to swap two phase wires and the two corresponding hall sensor wires as well.
Try swapping the Blue and Yellow Phase wires and the Green and Yellow Hall wires (assuming the wires on that motor are coloured the same as the GM hubmotors).

Please let us know if this works correctly.

Alan: aren't the hall sensors symmetric?
I didn't think the wheel knew our cared about the order.

Oh you definitely have to swap the corresponding hall sensors or the switching doesn't coincide...
Motor won't run...
UNLESS you're using a sensorless controller (which reads the back EMF to determine wheel position).

many thanks for your answers.....as soon as I get the motor working in it's original direction,  i'll try switching those 4 wires.....meanwhile, gary is sending me a new controller, since pushing the throttle simply locks up the motor, but doesn't start it spinning....he thinks it's a bad controller....
perhaps you folks know how you can set up the controller from your computer....i bought the USB connector from gary,  but there are no instructions as to how to change the controller settings....i have an apple computer....i find gary to be an honest person, very quick to try to help; but I personally find it scandalous that all this stuff comes without a single sheet of instructions...it's like gutenburg never invented the printing press.....many  thanks, jory squibb,  camden maine...
