Title: Increase peddle power?
Post by: fearlessfostick on June 09, 2011, 01:57:52 AM
My GM 1000 watt moves me along quite nicely.  In fact at full speed I have to be in 18th gear to have any peddle effect.  I like the speed and I like to peddle   Is there a gearing set up that would allow me  to provide significantly more peddle power when riding an ebike at full throttle?  Just curious.
Thanks

the DNP Epoch 7 speed freewheel. the last smallest cog has only 11 teeth.

Here's some helpful fitting information....  http://goldenmotor.com/SMF/index.php?topic=2788.0 (http://goldenmotor.com/SMF/index.php?topic=2788.0)

That's what teachers are supposed to do. ;)

Peter, if you can find a 52 tooth chainwheel to go with the above mentioned 11 tooth freewheel, your pedals would rotate one turn every second (60rpm cadence) at 22mph.
The higher gearing should make it possible to pedal assist at higher speeds without having to over rev your legs! ;D

Most non-professional cyclists are comfortable pedalling somewhere between 60–80 rpm (22-30mph with 52:11 gearing).

At 60rpm, I would only manage 14mph with my 42 tooth chainwheel and a 14 tooth rear sprocket. :(

;D I suppose I could be.... 'here to get drunk and irritate' ;D
But it's nice to be able (for once) to answer a members question :D

I have my uses, although they maybe limited!

Also, as Alan says,  a larger front chainwheel also really helps. If you have a four bolt crank arm you may find that a 48Tooth is the largest you can get, it's a nice and easy swap. just undo the bolts, slide through the crank arm to remove and fit the new one. 5 minute job ;)

Thanks all for the advice and for not hazing me about misspelling pedal!

Installed a 52 tooth chain wheel and that by itself is making a difference as I can feel the torque when I pedal .  My top speed level, pedaling (with the wind) has been just over 52kph.  Not bad.  I may look at installing the 11 cog free wheel later.  Imagine how fast I can go when I get in shape LOL. Thanks for all the advice!
