Title: MP tube valve size
Post by: Andrew on October 02, 2010, 07:58:55 AM

what inner tube valve is needed for the MP wheel?  i.e is it a 'presta' thin valve or a car type valve? usually on bike wheels only one of the two will fit.  Also how long does the valve have to be due to the thicker rim wall?

As I wrote in an earlier post,
Is it possible to have some sort of table where we can fill in this kind of measurement?
I mean a table that wouldn’t disappear down by the other post. Or maybe a category just for these kind of questions and the answers available in tables at the top.

I’ll take the measurement you want during the day, will be back later.

The holes for the tube valve are sized for Schrader valves. Thank god they are not presta. I hate those things! I just use standard valve length tubes. The valve only sticks out of the rim a small amout and then I screw on a valve extension. This really works well as it prevents the valve from pushing back into the rim when you air it up.

i  agree, as you can see i'm currently stabbing in the dark at present, and am asking very basic need to know questions.  There could be a FAQ section?  New comers like myself are still left with many gaps to fill in concerning the golden motor kits, especially when it comes to having to adapt a current bike ready for the MP kit.

Thanks Peter. :)

The valve hole diameter is 8,4 mm an the thickness of the rim is 20 mm. It makes it possible to use Schrader valve, which I think is the best as I can check the pressure much simpler and without the risk to destroy the valve. It’s also possible to use Dunlop valve as it have the same diameter but these are normally to short although it exist longer ones. The Dunlop valve is in my opinion just crap and belongs in the bicycle museum, as you cannot control the pressure. The Presta valve have a thinner diameter but can be used anyway with a valve hole reducer (http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLqrymode.a4p?f_ProductID=6497&f_FullProductVersion=1&f_SupersetQRY=C275&f_SortOrderID=1&f_bct=c003154c003139c003528). Their only benefits against the Schrader valves are that they can be fitted on a narrower rim and they are normally longer.

thanks for the measurements Peter.   Have just had to buy a presta valve tube for my front wheel as this is the only fitment for the wheel hole.  I have today sourced a schrader valve adaptor for my rear MP wheel just in case the valve on the tube isn't quite long enough to easily pump up.  So now I have both different valves on my bike.... dooh! ::)

It's just a waiting game now until the kit arrives. I paid for the Air shipping to the UK, I hope it does not take forever to get here :-\

You can drill the rim to fit the schrader valve so that you can have both the same. You can get long valved schrader tubes I have one on my pie (from ebay), makes blowing up the tyre much easier, I tried fitting a standard valve but it's fiddly to fit as it's too short, barely enough room to fit the cap.
If you drill your rim make sure you remove any sharp edges form drilling.

thanks for the tips. I've since bought a valve extension for teh pie wheel, and a valve adaptor 'presta to schrader' for my front wheel/tube.
